Are all car designers taking drugs nowadays?

It's the effect of the "One Ford" design philosphy - they make ugly cars for Americans so we have to buy them as well.

"Ford claims, is that it has been re-engineering the car to accommodate European tastes"

Ford have really played their joker with this one! cant see anyone topping it in the Ugly Stakes.

But if it did have a point, it would be because it was 4 wheel drive (except they wont import them, so we just get 2 wheel drive).

I'm slighly amused by the fact that Ford decided to try to compete with the Nissan Juke(Joke) that still looks like Darth Vader's helmet that got sat on by an elephant.

Designers who learnt how to work a computer at car design college but seem to have to a mental block when it comes to designing an elegant car.

Its got some seriously foul looking competition, in no particular order Mitsi AX, Fiat 500L (MPW version even worse if that were possible) , Chrylser Ypsilion, Land Rover Ewok, MINI Countryman, Audi A1.

I know that you don't see a car from sitting inside, but i could not spend my hard earned on a car that would repulse its own mother.

It's all in the eye of the beholder and while I agree this isn't looking promising I for one love the variety of design which is now in the marketplace.

I can understand why some don't like the Juke, I think it looks great - would you prefer a motoring landscape made up of Russian doll styling of the Audi, BMW school or designers who are prepared to be different.

If the difference is restricted to acceptable or ugly, then who needs to be different.

.... I for one love the variety of design which is now in the marketplace.

I beg to differ. Variety is something I don't see much of. Shapes and general curvatures are pretty similar, though I do agree about the trend towards the bizarre. Also the relentless obesification - why do all makers have to imitate Chelsea tractors? Because the mass buyers are like sheep I suppose.

Had a Ypsillion on holiday in Italy but it was branded as a Lanica! must think Chrylser will do better over here - dont think Lancias are available?

Official, Ford new entrant in the ugly stakes - RT

For historical reasons, Lancia is a badly tainted brand in the UK - other countries got over the engines falling out of Lancia Beta's because of rust - but we Brits haven't!

Maybe it's unavoidable that small crossovers look alike - Vauxhall Mokka, Fiat Sedici etc. Perhaps the hideous front and external spare wheel are there to identify it as super-ugly rather than just plain ugly. I suppose one has to applaud the fact that a spare wheel is there at all.

I had a Juke as a hire car last year, what an awful contraption! The interior has vast swathes of high gloss painted surfaces waiting to be scratched, and every time I applied the handbrake me passenger had to move to the left to allow me access. I refuse to comment on the exterior design, the moderators wouldn't like the language.

I'm glad I took the time to read all the posts as mine echo's yours to a fault, awful car.

Serious entrant - it is grotseque! However, one doesn't see that when driving it and the interior suits one then buy it, all other things being equal. Ugly design and the colour shown doesn't do it any favours either.

No worse than anything else, but a lot better than a Pjuke.

Flaming awful. It looks like someone puffed up a Cat B damaged Fiesta with a pair of bellows. I must admit I did initially misread the name of the car too - Ecosport became Escort....!

I really can't understand all this vitriol aimed at the Juke, I wouldn't buy one but I too had one as a hire car last year in Scotland and unexpectedly ended up spending about 9 hours driving up and back on the west coast. It was comfortable, handled well, could have done with more power (but I've never driven a car I don't say that about sooner or later). I liked the interior, there's interest to it, there are some hard plastics but no rattles or squeeks. It's not a big car externally so the interior is the size you'd expect, I don't recall it being cramped or having a problem with the hand brake for two normal sized people.

Live a little and celebrate the variety of design we have on the roads right now. I hate to think of the appoplectic state some of the posters are going to work themselves into when designers, unconstrained by traditional engines can really go to town on electric car design.

AARGH, MY EYES. Has it come from the same pen as the philistine who designed the B-Max? Those arent exactly selling like hot cakes, amazing how they can turn the success of Fiesta into abject failure.

the interiors of Fords now look like cheap ghetto blasters from the 80s, or perhaps something the Power Rangers might fly in.

Official, Ford new entrant in the ugly stakes - alan1302

I quite like it!

And I asked Mrs alan1302 and she does as well...beauty iss in the eye of the beholder as they say!

I'm not sure we do - many cars are very plain/conservative looking now

What I said about the Nissan Juke when it first appeared was that it looked like the designers had looked through their entire collection of recent unused styling ideas and then incorporated all of them in one car! The same goes for this Ford.

It's amazing what a difference that spare tyre makes on the back. Other than that it is a Kuga put through the photo copier on 0.7.
I am continually surprised at how ugly some cars are - surely good design doe not add to the cost of a car does it.
Official, Ford new entrant in the ugly stakes - Sofa Spud

And I thought externally mounted spare wheels were out of fashion these days. On the Ecosport, which I believe is only available as 2-wheel drive and doesn't have big wheels, I can't see any reason for an externally mounted spare.

Official, Ford new entrant in the ugly stakes - drd63

What difference does it being two wheel drive make? There are so many complaints about space savers, inflation kits etc I'd have thought we might have more people welcoming the return of the external spare wheel. I'm quite happy to have big wheels, reasonable boot and inflation kit.
