hi when my car starts from cold it has black smoke from exhaust which does fade when warm .ive noticed a popping noise like sucking air from engin aswell.it dosent overheat but smells like burning rubber when driving and the engin feels hot if taken on long run the tempreture goes from half way down to quarter any thoughts many thanks...it has 139.000 on clock

Vanos on its wayout? hi thanks for your reply but dont know what this means is the engine had it or can it be salvaged cheap enought will the car still be ok to use someone else suggested it could be am injector gone does this sound way off

I suggest you go onto a BMW forum the Vanos is vaiable valve timing on BMWs this 4 cylinder engine was never much good with so many difficult problems such as the crankshaft and camshaft sensors.We have many BWM'S all six or eight cylinder my son in his garage will not touch 4 cylinder cars anymore due to there problems and peoples reluctance to pay money to find out what is wrong with them,anything over 100k is a bonus.

Could be something and nothing I hope it is but be prepared these engines pop HG for fun and be can very expensive this would account for your temp gauge problems and black smoke and the Vanos is a nightmare to fix.
