You need to put more info on your question. Its impossible to give good advice with all the details of your use etc. What age is the car for instance.

A few examples would be:

If its an older car get a petrol.

If you do less than about 7000 miles a year or do no journeys over 20 miles get a petrol.

If you have no specific legal needs for an auto get a manual.

Whatever car you buy look for the best you can afford from a reputable source.

But there are many far better cars than RAV4 3 doors out there. Sod all space in the boot and difficult to get into the back.

Ok im not sure which year to get it depends what around prob 2002-2006

Toyota stopped making them in 2006.

I would only be doing prob 5000 miles a year

I am looking for the newest and best price prob from a dealer as i cannot find anything private, so a FSH wanted.

I know there is not much room in the back but im going to take the seats out as i courier dogs, drive on muddy lanes, and thought it would be a small car to park.

what other cars do you recommend? ive looked at Land Rover but too expensive, also i like the look of the Honda 4 x 4.

Im a lady who has no idea about cars.

Thanks anyway

Have you thought of a 3 door Suzuki Vitara?

Still manufactured - you will get a newer Suzuki for the same money!

1.6 & 2.4 petrols an 1.9 diesel.

Do you really need a 4 x 4. If the lanes are simply muddy on tarmac you will manage quite well with a 2wd car. That gives you lots more choice.

A tall car can be a pain with dogs as they get older, a low loading lip is far more important.

At 5000 miles a year buy a petrol whatever you buy.

I would prefer a 4x4 as i live in Cornwall, i actually drive on beaches as well as on the moors, and not on tarmac.

Ive got a ramp for the dogs, thanks for your advice though, i will stick to petrol and manual.

I would opt for the auto, as the clutch (on the petrol anyway) is rubbish. Its heavily sprung with an action that is really unpleasant in traffic. The diesel might be better but 5000 miles a year suggests petrol.

Hi, having bought a couple of Rav4's for my wife and driving them across the continent I thought I would add my comments. We decided to buy a 3-door Auto petrol as we dod a lot of city driving. She is a midwife and liked the seating position but needed something short for parking in tight spaces. After the first Rav4, a mk1 1999 model we decided to lok at upgrading to a newer model. However we where put off by the reports of auto gearboxes failing and the 3 lambda sensors in the exhaust failing, all costing big bucks. Therefore we bough another Mk1 model. The only reason for switching was that my wife fancied a change of colour from white to black. Really. Both cars have been ultra relaible and passed each MOT with no problems, well the last one needed a brake light buld. I appreciate that if you want some peace of mind sense would say buy a newer on, I think 06 onwards are better or save a load of money and buy a late mk1 model. The other car we considered was the Mitshubishi Pinin Shogun or Honda HRV, both older models but reliable. We avoided nerwe modesl as both cars pick up a lot of parking dings in the city. Good luck.

Thanks for that info, ive heard the clutch isnt too good as well, its all so confusing i would be buying a 2004-2006, Toyota stopped making them in 2006 anyway (3 dr). I am also looking at the Honda HRV and i do like the look of the Shogun, i only have a small parking space, so im limited. Cheers.
