Recurring VISA payments - stivvy

Having been round the block a few times I thought I knew about the different ways of setting up regular payments, mainly Standing Orders and Direct Debits. I had not heard of "recurring VISA payment". This is where the details you give from your VISA card are retained and used to take regular payments from your account. I am embarrassed to say that I had not noticed a payment of £8.59 to FORCES WAR RECORDS MELKSHAM going out each month. Apparently when researching my late father-in-law's RAF record about two years ago I had by default agreed to this monthly arrangement when I thought I was simply making a one-off payment. Another case of not reading the small print. I just wonder how many hundreds if not thousands of others who have been caught out by this little-known process. The arrangement has now ceased after a long draw-out correspondence by email, there is no telephone contact, by the way. I have written to the HO at Melksham requesting a refund.

This is a common pitfall.

The problem is that the recurring payment is usually seen as guaranteed. If you were supplying goods on installments you might regard that as essential but it's also exploited for recurring 'subscriptions'.

You might expect them to stop at card expiry but that seems not always to be case of card is renewed with same number.

Persoanlly I seem to conspire to either lose my debit card every couple of years or need it replaced due to a failed chip or compromise of the magenetic strip. That wil flush out any recurrent payments as payees question a failed demand.

Credit cards do need careful checking of statements but unlike the current account there are only a handful of transactions a month so 'rogues' are easy to identify.

It is easily done. I inadvertantly fell for this scam when buying an item from abroad through the internet. I noticed another payment on my card a few weeks later. I queried it with MBNA the credit card provider. they told me it was a recurring monthly payment. When I protested they agreed to stop the agreement and refuse any other payment requests under the distance selling regulations and I got a refund. Quite worrying really, if I had not noticed it could have continued for some time. They should be banned from credit cards and only done thorugh the normal banking system where we have some measure of control. Eternal vigilance on things concerning money is the key. You have to look after yourself in this world. Cheers Concrete

You're right about being personally vigilant but I firmly believe that this form of payment should at least carry a prominent health warning and why have it anyway when there is other valid and reliable methods. Since being stung I have asked probably 20 or so contacts about these recurring payments and not one was aware of their existence. The organisation involved, War Office Military Records, Melksham has yet to respond to my correspondence or emails. And so far my bank says it is unable to take action to prevent processing future requests as the authority is with the payee. Something I'm in discussion about. To date I've had two monthly sums refunded as a gesture but have yet to establish how far back this arrangement started. The WOMR head office has ignored my request for a start date so another letter will be on its way. Makes you wonder how many others have been snared.

I'm quite happy about the increasing number of companies that now accept Paypal, no longer entering those credit card details quite so many times.

Fortunately haven't fallen for the repeat VISA con, yet...

goodness knows how i seem to inadvertantly get google chrome tacked on to downloads without asking time after time, detest that spy network with a vengeance so delete anything to do with them immediately.
