Jaguar X Type 2002 - Engine smell - Arb

I had all the cylinder coils and plugs changed earlier this year, 1400E then a few months later the engine started to miss; a pipe had come loose which supplies air to the motor 170E. Recently they wanted to check the transfer case oil level as there is a winter only oscillating grinding noise from the drivetrain 270E Since then there is burning plastic like smell from the engine, the temperature is half on the guage and the car seems to heat up super fast in the space of only 8 minutes. They refuse now to look at the car because they are no longer Jaguar dealers, but can only work on new vehicles under warranty. (something I was told of just prior to the last visit.) but they agreed to take it.

I find all of this very strange, not only the smell but their attitude, any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks

Can you clarify... 3 coils leads and plugs all changed at a main dealers if it is a v6 jaguar dealers are not known for working cheaply, air hose time to locate, fix replace inc vat doesn't sound unreasonable. For me sounds as if you have a radiator problem/cooling system, but is it economic to go on repairing the car when there are so many other potential problems. try to find an indie jag specialist. where are you in the country and maybe someone will advise.

No mileage, service history, engine size etc given.

We are not telepathic.

My understanding there are 6 coils one for each cylinder being a 2.5V6.?

One had dropped out and they suggested replacing them all as the labour was the most expensive part of the repair I was told.

The hose i mentioned was re attached not replaced, I am an Australian in the South of France, there are no independent Jaguar garages, even Bosch services centres do not have any Jag info on their diagnostic code readers, seemingly most of the rest.

The car according to the guage is not overheating around half temperature.

I managed to make a booking at a small garage nearby tomorrow morning, you might be right about getting out of this car even though I like it, the driver's seat has creaked for years and now the motor to height adjust has falled, as well a headlight to be eventually replaced at 600E

PS Mileage, not to upset is only 110000 kms. 5 speed manual black.

Thanks

Although the engines on these are based on ford models, there are subtle differences that make the diagnostic system not compatible. However there are lots of aftermarket diagnostic tools that can interrogate the jaguar system. You are not going to need any diagnostic kit to check for an overheating problem.Make sure the coolant level is checked from cold.Any loss can often be caused by any of the small coolant hoses that become brittle with age.As for replacing all 6 coils,I think this is a bit overkill,as I would only replace the 3 rear coils as a set if one of these were faulty,as access to these requires removal of the inlet manifold. The front 3 coils can be replaced in around 15 minutes.hth

Yes I realise that a diagnostic kit will not be needed in this case, but few few garages have one at all, (when the famed engine or abs light comes on) except of course for the main dealers

The coolant level is ok no sign of any leak.

Yes they replaced all coils; 6 with plugs with a labour cost of of 975E (7.3 hours.)

After this work this year some months after the air hose became loose, but i still had to pay to have it re attached. Then that evening the car broke down with a total battery failure, (4 years old, good brand.) and I noticed a squeak in the steering which luckily passed after 2 days.( this had been a problem years ago under warranty when Jaguar and I replaced the entire steering rack)

Now after the last visit, the smell!

Maybe they deserved to lose the franchise?

I am getting off track!

Thanks for helping

So, coils sorted, air hoses for som reason still detach...

Knowing you are there, and being so far from e-bay spares would suggest parting company with the car.

No the hose was re attached at my expense, however went to the garage this morning booked for me by a friend but he wasnt there at 9AM, it's a public holiday lol

Drove 40 minutes to get there via mountian roads no sign of the smell, or coming home, my guess is that they spilt oil maybe on the exhaust system and now its clear, a mystery?

I can order ebay spares here but garages are reluctant to fit any parts supplied by the owner; reason no profit for them!

Thanks

There is another reason why someone won't fit parts sourced from somewhere else. If they are faulty, poor quality, 'counterfeit' etc then when you've paid for them to be fitted you'll expect the 'fitter' to take responsibility for them. From an IT background I wouldn't expect us to fit parts that are supplied by customers either. It may appear harsh but it isn't.
