Skoda cars - Oil consumption - archie46

Hi. I have an Octavia, (1.8 tsi) which i bought 3months ago that is showing high oil consumption,( not even showing on dip stick after only 2) the car is 2yrs old and has done only 8k miles, my wife has the same issue with a Fabia 1.2 tsi, still under warranty.

My questions are:, are these turbo petrol engines known for this problem, have any other owners experienced the same?

Its not been driven hard enough. Who buys a Turbo engined car to do 4,000 miles a year?

Arent there some issues with turbos sucking oil out if you close the engine down to quick after stopping, or is this in the past.

The issue was residual heat carbonising oil in the turbo if shut down immedialtely after hard use. No way can a turbo suck oil after shutting down.

I have found engines that do lots of short runs and never warm up thoroughly use oil and engines that do longer journeys don't.

This goes for cars and motorbikes, for what it's worth.

If you have a look on Briskoda forum or any of the popular VW forums, you'll find it is a very common problem with the TSi range and lots of owners with the same queries.

I am not an expert on this, but from what I understand, VAG quote a fairly wide oil consumption spec on these engines, i.e, what you're seeing may be within their normal operating parameters. I would start to monitor it very accurately, keeping a record of mileage and any oil added, in parallel with a visit to Mr Skoda to establish their view on it.

Ultimately, whether it's a problem will depend on the severity, measured accurately over a period of time. Some engines are going to be better or worse than others but I agree it's a bit of a worry with a modern unit. The last car I had that burned oil was a MK 1 Astra, which had worn valve seals, before that was a 1275 Mini that used a pint every 250 miles - that was relatively normal back then for one of those!!!

Older VW petrols (MK1 and MK2 Golfs) often burned a litre per 1,000 miles, piston ring/bore wear was almost non existant thanks to the oil getting past the rings, on the other hand, big-end failures were common as owners let them run dry of oil!

1.2 tsi is not known as an oil burner.

1.4 twincharger in the Fabia VRS(180bhp?) (engine code CAVE) is a known problem as is I believe the 1.8Tsi in Octavia VRS form (200bhp?)

The humdrum 1.4tsi etc are all ok. Briskoda.net has lots of info on this including how to get a new engine out of Skoda (not that the new engine is any better)

I suspect that there are a lot of variables here, including how the engine is set up in manufacture, how the car is driven and possibly how it'sbeen run-in from new.

The 2.0 TSI (197 bhp) in my Octavia vRS hasn't used a drop in over 30,000 miles, but I don't have the expertise to speculate on the reasons why, so I won't.
