Reliant Robin - How do they handle? - Pebble

Just curious...since these cars are missing a wheel, does that make them harder to drive? Do they tend to tip over? When driving them do they feel like a normal car? I've never had the privilege of driving one.

Probably one of the worst handling cars out there. If they had swaped the wheels round so 1 at the back and two at the front it would of handled much better.

Also terrible tramlining by roadmarkings acting on the single wheel. Arrow markings could send you down the off-slip from a motorway.

Notoriously unstable just cornering and in cross winds, but once got hit side-on by a car jumping a red light. Ran for a short distance on one wheel and a bit of the bodywork. Luckily it dropped back onto three wheels instead of rolling.

Another day, foot slipped off the brake pedal. Found brake fluid dripping down it due to the brake assembly and master cylinder working loose!

Not advisable to load anything heavy behind the rear axle in a Robin van or the front wheel starts lifting when you accelerate.

When me and all my ex-schoolmates were teenagers one of us had a Reliant something-or-other. He use to specialise in frightening the living daylights out of anybody who was daft enough to ride in the passenger seat by cornerning hard, lifting one of the rear wheels and carrying on driving with a rear wheel in the air.

Once drove one round the block, turning into my street at a normal sort of speed the inside rear wheel lifted. So not for me, though I seem to remember cops chasing one for many miles in Derbyshire at up to 70 mph a few years ago.

Many years ago I watched one struggling along a snow covered road. The snow was several inches deep, rutted with tyre tracks, and frozen solid overnight. The front wheel was bouncing up and down on the 'mountain' between the tracks, and as he passed us it slipped into one of the tracks. He was stuck - with two wheels in one track and one on top of the mountain. A gang of us (young lads) helped him out, and off he went - for the same thing to happen within a 100 yards, we helped him out again and legged it, otherwise we'd have been helping him out all day.

the issue with the Reliant 3 wheel layout [done to increase load space]....isn't about the vehicle......but more about the driver.

In the same way a motorcycle combination takes a different sort of driver /rider skill to a solo motorcycle, or a car..

If really bothered, to see 3 wheeler drivng skill at its best, go out and spectate on one of the MCC long distance classic reliability trials?

Whilst they have issues withthe front wheel being in an ackward place, a well-driven one will often go where a Land-rover fears to tread. Yes....actually getting it to go in the intended direction is an art in itself...but, so is a motorcycle & sidecar?

But remember, they were built for a very different transport environment, to a particular set of legal rules.

Don't knock 'em....just learn how to get the best from them [something modern drivers have forgotten how to, in any vehicle??
