There seem to be about 4 types, 1.6, 2, 2.2 and 3 litre engines fitted (excluding some smaller ones).

How many manufacturers are there of these 4 sizes. Do Audi, Renault/Nissan, Mercedes, BMW, Citroen/Peugeot, Fiat, Ford, Jaguar/Land Rover, VW/Seat, Honda, Chrysler, Toyota, Hyundai etc all make their own?

If not, from whom do they buy the engine?

All - How many car diesel engine manufacturers? - RT

Hyundai build their own, to their own design now, but used to be under licence from VM Motori and Mitsubishi.

Kia's diesels are built by Hyundai as they're in the same group.

Chevrolet diesels were VM Motori engines built by Hyundai but gradually changing over to the all-new GM diesels.

Opel/Vauxhall have used various Isuzu, Fiat Powertrain, and GM diesels but gradually changing over to the all-new GM diesels.

Mitsubishi have used their own, VAG and PSA but are now using their own again.

It gets very incestuous after that so I'll let someone else fill those in properly.

The PSA 1.6 is also used by Ford and others. VW/Seat/Audi obviously share too.

Otherwise I think it's just a case of similar technology producing the same power output steps meaning capacities match as well.

Ford build a lot of PSA/Ford diesels of all sizes and some of these are used by other manufacturers.

AFAIK for the Ford/PSA manufacturing alliance, Ford build the V6 and 4-cyl van diesels while PSA build the 4-cyl car diesels.

So the V6 diesels are used by Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Peugeot and Citroen - the same for the 4-cyl car diesels but Volvo also use them.

Do Fiat still make their own engines?

Toyota/Lexus make their own diesels? Do they makae their own diesels for the vans?

Are Honda still developing their own diesels? 2.2 and a 1.6?

Do Fiat still make their own engines?

Yes - Fiat contributed diesels to the alliance with GM, to form Powertrain - when the GM/Fiat alliance was dissolved, Fiat regained control of Powertrain but GM continued using the Powertrain (ex-Fiat) diesels but are now changing to in-house GM diesels.

Fiat also own 50% of VM Motori and are about to buy the remaining 50% from GM.

The Fiat Chrysler group will use both VM Motori and Fiat diesels.

Yes Honda develop and build their own diesels in the UK at Swindon, both the existing 2.2 and the new 1.6.

Where is the 1.9 diesel in the MG6 from?

Where is the 1.9 diesel in the MG6 from?

According to an MG dealer's website:-

"The DTi-Tech diesel is a brand new engine, designed and engineered in the UK specifically for MG6. The DTi-Tech engine is paired with an all new 6 speed transmission which produces 150PS with 350 NM of torque - you won't find more pulling power per pound anywhere in the market!"

Volvo buy in the 1.6 and 2.0 TDCI from PSA/Ford, but the 2.0 and 2.4 5-cylinder diesels are Volvo's own (the blocks and major components are also used by the company's marine division I believe).

These are all being phased out by the company's new in-house VEA 2.0 4-cylinder diesel and petrol, so they'll just have one basic petrol and diesel engine, and will change ancilliaries and mapping to get the different power outputs.

The Volvo 5-cylinder diesels are derived from the Audi 5-cyl engine originally.

Surley, aside from the manufacture of the block, pistons and crankshaft. etc

A lot of diesel engine development is down to Bosch/Delphi/Ricardo etc who provide the technological developments and injection components.

And common sence would suggest a move towards "modular" construction.

And common sence would suggest a move towards "modular" construction.

Whilst that does have technical, and environmental, advantages - the automobile industry is still competitive and can never agree for very long on collaborative projects.

The "Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance" between Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai/Kia lasted just 5 years before they went their own ways - in reality it was the production-ready Hyunda/Kia Theta engine which Chrysler and Mitsubishi developed for their own uses and going into production behind Hyundai/Kia.

Similarly, the GM/Fiat engine deal is all but dead now and the defunct Mercedes/Chrysler arrangement no longer shares any engines.

The Volvo 5-cylinder diesels are derived from the Audi 5-cyl engine originally.

Volvo used the Audi 2.5 5-cyl diesel until 2001, when Volvo introduced its own D5. Although the Audi & Volvo motors have the same cylinder bore, the Volvo motor has a shorter stroke giving lower capacity and is all-aluminium, whereas the Audi is iron-block

As I said, "derived from".

It's common to alter bore and/or stroke and it's not uncommon to design an alloy block to replace a steel one.

2 Questions.

1. Im finding it hard to beleive with such a small volume, MG make their own diesel engine.

2. Can someone comment on Toyota. Do they make their own diesel engines?
Do they use their own diesel engines in the commerical vehicles?

All - How many car diesel engine manufacturers? - dan86

Toyota do make there own deisel engines and do install them in tjere commercial vehicles. Yhe only exception I think is the van witch is based on a Peugeot.

All - How many car diesel engine manufacturers? - daveyK_UK
Is that the same medium size van you can buy with a Toyota/Peugeot/Citroen badge? (ProAce/Expert/Dispatch)
Can you buy it with a Fiat badge on mainland Europe?

Other than the extended 5 yearwarranty and gnerally better delaerships, why would you pay the premium of over £5000 for the Toyota badge compared to the Citroen?

Again, why would you pay the premium of over £3000 for the Peugeot badge over the Citroen?

You can pick up the Citroen version for £11,000
The Peugeot Version can be had for less than £14,000
The cheapest Proace I can find is £16,800

That's probably in anticipation of high volumes eventually within China itself

Subaru make their own diesel as well - a Boxer flat-4.

Hmmm- the price of progress. But you could service and and maintain the Prima with a set of normal hand tools, no fault codes, no electronics, loads of them are still going in boats, generators and water pumps-not a bad old engine that, and I've never heard of of one going t*ts up given fair treatment.

In marine mode with an aftercooler they were rated at 102 hp, so not quite so pedestrian after all.
