Mini Cooper Convertible - Broken roof tensioner retaining clip - BobDee

My wife's 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible has developed a fault - a broken roof tensioner retaining clip. I have found similar problem on a USA forum but nothing in the UK. I can't believe we are the only owner with this problem. No surprise BMW want to replace the whole roof at £2,000. However without any suggestion from me the dealer has offered to pay half the parts cost plus labour which is still £1,200 pretty shocking for a low mileage 4 year old car. Anyone else got this problem? Bob Dee

I am sure this is a fairly common fault. The Mini parts catalogue lists a tensioning cable and clip for around £5.Not sure how long it would take to fit.You may be better off finding a roof specialist.hth

elekie&a/c doctor - thank you for your suggestion I will have a look in the parts catalogue. I think I can get it done cheaper as you say but its more the principle of the roof failing after 4 years. BD

My neighbour's wife has one of these cars and suffered from roof problems (not sure if it was the same as yours though). I think he opted for a roof specialist as the BMW dealership eventually admitted they wouldn't do the work, just sub it out.

Update for those who made suggestions and for anyone else who suffers a similar problem. After very little correspondence from me, BMW HQ and dealership paid for total cost of repair. Sounds a fishy if you ask me.... but I'm not complaining. Bob Dee

Wife has a 2009 Cooper where the plastic fastening next to the petrol cap has completely split in two. Not sure if there is uneven tension but the examples I saw on the USA side were also both from what we would call the passenger side. I have removed the clip and a small piece of metal backing to the original plastic anchor attached to the hood. Not sure where this will lead, time to contact BMW.

A 2009 car and 'time to contact BMW' ?

Prepare to be laughed away. HJ himself has repeatedly said that ANY liability on the manufacturer can only last a maximum of 6 years from new.

Long time but I thought it best to update. There is an official BMW/Mini repair kit if the roof tie splits. It arrives as a kit of parts for under £30. It will repair both sides. Essentially it is a replacement plastic fixing point part with double sided tape. You trim flush the old fixing point and simply stick it on the old defective part. THen drill three holes and with the rivets and washers provided pop rivet the new part in place. You then reassemble and clip back into place. Tip here is pass some string through the clip when re-fitting. When you drop the clip you can fish it out again. When cliped back just cut the string and pull free. I was quoted £230 / side to do the work. It takes ~20min a side to do.

Hi Guy from Midlands, I'm facing exactly this problem and am grateful for your help. I have the kit but am struggling to get decent access to the broken tensioner, You didn't take any photos by any chance.

Tried You Tube?

I've done a few repairs based on tutorial videos on there and saved £££sss.

As I am sure you know Rob, there is no "liability on a car manufacturer" in any shape or form, unless they sold the car direct to the customer- which is extremely unlikely.

The 6 year limit is the time limit for an action in a county court before a claim for breach of contract is time barred..
