Japanesed radios any way to tune them in - barney100

I have a Japanese import with an apline radio thats not bad on FM but the other bands are grim. Is there any way of getting it attuned to British bands or will I need to cahnge it?

The spacing steps between stations broadcasting on AM mode (MW and LW) in Europe is 9khz but 10khz spacing is used in US and other countries. I suspect your Alpine is set up to tune in US or other 'foreign' size steps

Does it only scan for stations or can you tune it manually using buttons or a knob to move the frequency up or down?

Obviously not universal but I've had several of different european brands, plus a Kenwood, that tune in 1khz steps when using the manual option. If you can get the main stations you want, eg 693 & 909 for R5 and 198 for R4 to tune that way it should be possible to store them as presets.

If you take the radio out of the car you may find a slider to select spacing somewhere on the case or inside it. If you google the exact model for a user manual it may explain how to change either physically or by a configuration mode that allows you to set such things in software.

It might also be switchable on power up after disconnection from battery as though on first use BUT MAKE SURE YOU'VE GOT THE SECURITY CODE BEFORE DISCONNECTING.

its not just the steps.

the bands start and stop further up and down the scale in different countries.

so if you want to listen to something near either end of a band you maybe out of luck.

The Japanese FM band goes from 76 to 90 MHz.

Better get used to listening to Radio 2!

It's usually the FM band that is the problem. So if that works then I would guess it has either been replaced already or has a converter. something like tinyurl.com/qca4je3

Another possibility is that the aerial is carp for AM. Might be best to consult a car audio specialist.

Might be worth replacing the whole head unit for a new one you can pick up fairly cheap ones that ate are of a decent enough quality.
