306 DT Bad Starting - hm
My 306 DT (M reg) is a really bad starter. It's got just over 135K on the clock. I have recently replaced the glow plug (which are working correclty), the fuel and air filter. It runs fine once she's going, but on start up it needs about 20 sec of cranking, then it stumbles to a start (med revs). Can anyone suggest anything.
306 DT Bad Starting - Xantiargh!
Had similar problems with my diesel. After glow plugs/filters the next thing to check was air ingres. Check the fuel pipes for splits, particularly at joints and bends. I'm told the diesel doesn't leak out, air leaks in.

Apparently you can smear grease on the joints to provide an airtight seal. When the cold starting problem disappears you've found your leak...

Good luck

"I have recently replaced the glow plugs"
How long ago was this, and were they a good make such as BERU or Bosch?! Did you replace all 4 plugs? Does it smoke whilst it is cranking? If it does, you can assume glowplugs. If it does not, you can assume airlock. Even though you have just replaced them, do not dismiss them as working. They must heat up to an orangy red heat within about 2 seconds. Make sure you test all 4 at once, it is not unknown for all the glowplugs to work seperatly but then fail when connected to the bus bar, due to a faulty controller. (They should draw approx 40 amps from cold, 10 - 12 amps each.)
Had the same problem with my 306, turned out to be the new glowplugs had failed within a day.

Cheers,

i replaced the glow plugs (x4) with NGK about three weeks ago. I did check each one before I changed them, I intent to check with the am-meter tonight. Not too sure about smoking, but there is a lot of white smoke when she finally fire's and runs.

I get back to if one's gone.

I have checked the glow plug again, they are all working well, not to sure about the air. If she was sucking air, won't that upset the way it runs when I'm driving?

Should the manual primer always be hard or should it take a couple of pumps?

I keep reading about compression and injectors which I'm not V.fimaiar with.

It runs well, and I get about 40/45mpg (I drive it quite hard).

I will check the fuel pipes to night.

cheers

I had exactly this problem with my 306 XLD. It would not start without priming the fuel system if left standing for more than about an hour. It took Peugeot 2 days and a diesel specialist to find the problem which was a failed gasket on the fuel filter. As is mentioned in another reply, the air leaks in so there are no visible fuel leaks. Cheap solution if this is the case!
