8-10k miles a year, £3k to £5k budget - Taffy Laith

As per the subject, Im looking for a used car and would like some knowledge from people who know more than myself!!!

Currently drive a mondeo 54 plate automatic diesel - I like automatics and would be happy with another, however I also like good MPG (doesnt everyone!) and understand that those things dont mix... But whatever happens, I wont buy a small car such as a C1 etc!!

Not a lot of motorway driving really, mostly urban under 50mph..

Any ideas??

In that sort of price range, and with less motorway cruising, reliablity and running costs are as important, if not more so, than mpg.

Toyota Corolla or early Auris, both come as competent autos, and should be reliable.

Also, Honda CR-V mk2 petrol autos have a great reliability reputation, and a bit more interesting than a saloon or hatch (only a bit mind)

Am I better with a petrol rather than a Diesel given my requirements?

Under 10k petrol is considered best by most people. At your mileage you could have a larger car and enjoy it.
