Suzuki Grand Vitara 5dr - help! bought 4.5k car, 2 weeks later needs 5kwork - ruthers

Hi, just bought a car from private seller 2 weeks ago for 4.5k..he bought it from dealer in may for same money..found out that the dpf needs replacing( no warning light came on) as does the cat converter...local suzuki garage have quoted me 5.5k to fix this all...the seller of the car is spanish and is going back to spain in 3 weeks, speaks tiny amount of english, but my question is i have heard that the dealer has a responsibilty for 6 months after they sell it... but does that pass on to me as the new owner of the car??

I have no money so cannot afford to repair this car, and am really stuck as to what my options are??

hope someone can help me please

No,the chap you bought the car from had a contract with the dealer, you do not. Buying private leaves you with little comeback on the seller.

Sorry but unless you take out a case in court against the seller and can prove he knowingly sold you a faulty car you are going to have to repair the car yourself. Even if you won how would you propose to force him to give you money when he is no longer in the country.

A non-Suzuki garage may be able to do a less costly repair but as you already probably know things are cheap for a reason.

Thread drift! Can a car be fitted both a DPF and a cat convertor? I though it was DPF for diesel and cat convertor for petrol

Yes - diesels have used cats for a while now - my Euro V Santa Fe has both.

Hi , absolutely agree you have no hope of any redress against either of the sellers ,
However the prices you quote for the repairs £5500 ? Seem ridiculous ,I would expect to pay in he region of £5 / £600 for repairs like that .try e bay or motor factors rather than main dealers .i recently repaired a Laguna diesel estate with a new dpf and a cat for £600 ! .i don't believe their will be such a vast difference between the two cars

You have my sympathies, but the fact is that buying privately is cheaper than buying from a dealer for a reason - which is that you have virtually no come-back. Effectively you are buying "as seen".

My suggestion would be to do as Tony says - shop around and preferably get a personal recommendation for a good independent place that will do the job for a decent price. Now you have the car it would be worth your while to sort it out.

If you would like to give us a general idea of your location maybe someone here could point you in the right direction.

Your only other option is to sell it and hope to get what you paid, but personally I couldn't do that if I knew the car had faults and had to lie about them to get the car sold.

Have a look on UK Ebay 2-300 for a petrol and 5-600 for a diesel plus 2 hours to fit.
