Citroen C2 1.1 sx 3door 2005 - Another first car new driver problem - Tally

My 17 year old who has passed his test is like every 17 year old in wanting his first car, he's done really good in saving £2000 for car and £2000 for insurance working evenings as hes at college doing his A levels. He has seen a Citreon C2 1.1sx which looks nice 2005 plate 64000 miles, but i know nothing about cars as i am at the stage where i can but new or nearly new with 2 years warranty left and have free servicing in the deal. So we need to have a look at it with regards to buying it for him but what do i look at ? do you get warranty with a 6-7 year old car from a small dealer is there any pitfalls i can avoid as i will feel bad if we buy it and its a dud.

Thanks

I went through a similar process with my daughter, she saved money and ended up buying a Peugeot 206, against my advice, because she liked the colour and the alloys.

Having realised what a money pit it was, and selling the car, she then followed my advice for a change and bought a Yaris, which was faultless for 3 years until she sold it to another new driver locally as the mileage had reached 160k. ( and it's still going strong, we see it around on a regular basis) She then bought an Aygo, which has similarly been faultless for the last 2 years. Based on that experience, I'd forget a Citroen and get a Toyota. They may be a bit dull to young eyes, but the reliability makes up for any shortcomings in the fashion department.

All dealers are obliged to give you at least a months warranty but they will have to be clear what that warranty covers. However you would have the right to reject the car if it was a serious dud.

Best thing to do is have a look on the roads on your daily driving and see how many C2's of a similar age are actually on the roads. In my humble opinion, Citroens (and Pugs) are very risky to take on (C1/107 excepted)

I agree with a previous post, something Japanese is a surer bet such as a Yaris or Swift.

Mark 1 YAris is safe to drive , economical and extremely reliable.

A warranty is of no use if teh car keeps breaking down.

French cars have gained a well deserved reputation. And a warranty is a sticking plaster on a festering sore.

My son has put 37k miles on a 12 year old Yaris 1.0 - now on 130k miles...Basically serviced , exhausts and brakes. That's the type of car your offspring need. And it has room for all srts of rubbish which C1/Aygo do not have. Lots with lowish miles and FSH..
