ANPR for fuel - Ben 10

Parking at Gatwicks long stay car park last week I noticed the use of ANPR at the entrance barrier.

Could the petrol companies not try this tech to stop fraud. You would register your reg numbers and payment card with a central database that covers ALL companies issuing fuel. This being that the owner might not be the keeper.

The ANPR would read the plate, let you fill up and then deduct from your account. That way the payment card and reg would have to marry with addresses registered on the database for both. This should stop the false platers driving off without paying or even attempting to enter.

For cash purchasers you could top up a card with cash and use it like a debit card registered on the database.

This should speed up fuelling as well as deterring crooks. A bit Big Brother maybe but it can be progress.

Only if crooks were honest enough to use their own registration plate. We don't nreed any more cameras in this country.

I'd like one please.....mine's rubbish!

Many petrol stations already have an ANPR system in place for authorising fuel pumps to deliver.

There is a big difference between ANPR cameras and CCTV cameras.

Why not have a big steel tube on a pivot at the exit to stop cars leaving before they have paid? They are called barriers I believe - just like are installed at fuel stations in Europe, where they are not interested in selling you hot pasties, coffee, soft drinks, cuddly toys, cigarettes, just petrol and diesel. Out of hours you just use your bank card for fuel.

Oh, sorry, I've just realised why they don't do it like this - it's called greed or in management speak - profit margin. Get the punter to queue to pay the fuel bill in the shop past all the shelves with all the junk on them. How come fuel stations over here in France just sell fuel? And the occasional cylinder of cooking gas. And still make a profit?

So don't moan about drive-offs, mr petrol station owner, it is within your power to stop them, just sacrifice some--------profit.

Yeah.

And?

What's your point?

In belgium recently, ALL Prepay! and in USA too! why not here?

Tricky to brim your tand on a pre-pay

ANPR for fuel - RaineMan
I hate pre-pay. My petrol gauge is totally inaccurate and the cost of brimming can vary by £20 depending on recent use! I am all for deterring criminals but why should the rest of us suffer inconvenience for their actions?

In my area there used to be six petrol stations and now there are two. Recently I wanted to buy some coolant. Neither stock it or much else that is car related. However I could buy the ingredients for Sunday lunch if I wanted. No wonder it takes so much longer to fill up these days!

Pay at the pump would seem the best way. Our local Tesco is PATP only at night.

Our local Asda fuel station is unmanned so "Pay At Pump" all the time - but watched by CCTV from the main store - it works well with the cheapest fuel for miles.

I don't like prepay either it can be guess work.Whilst on holiday in Florida a few years ago had to use this system. After a few days the petrol attendant got used to seeing me and let me fill the tank first and I payed up after filling.

Really?

"Just order the required amount of petrol and we deliver it first class to your home through the letter box"

Do they provide the match too??

Tried to place some fuel in the "basket" just for fun and got "sorry there is a problem with our ordering system"

Has anyone actually tried this site? Why aren't we all buying fuel this way if it's genuine?

Possibly because it would cost you an absolute fortune for the facilities to store the fuel legally and safely. Your home insurance would also take a large hike if you told them, if you didn't and had a problem you would probably not be insurred.

Had a look at the site. They still sell leaded fuel and say "a bit of lead never hurt anyone". They also sell fuel with 4 x the normal lead content saying "the extra lead really makes your car fly". Don't want to get into an argument about the pro's and cons of lead in petrol but there are two things that they don't mention on the site, lead will kill your cat and lead was never a performance improver. It was used to prevent detonation in poor quality fuels of years ago and also prevent valve recession.

Look like a bunch of sharks to me.

Just looked at the petrol direct site, on the "Legal" tab it says:

"We do not endorse any attempt to circumvent fuel duty. Petrol and other fuels are dangerous and should be handled only with the appropriate equipment and should not be sent through the post.

We do not actually hold any trademarks. This is a parody site, not an actual trading corporation and as such any similarities in names and trademarks are covered by "fair use" provisions of intellectual property laws. Vin Diesel is a very entertaining actor, not a biofuel. There actually is company called Petrel Resources plc which is in no way related to our so-called biofuel. We are also not related to PetroDirect, a US company."

So its a wind up.
