I'm looking to get a used medium sized car (astra/focus size) which is an automatic (or semi auto) and has 5 doors. It should also do more than 41 mpg which is what our current 15 year old toyota does (quoted).

In terms of budget, it's up to £7k but could be extended to £8k for something really economical and/or low tax. It's mostly going to be used for city driving, the occasional motorway journey, so probably 5-7000 miles per year, would a petrol or diesel be recommended?

Another thing which would be nice but is not vital are good looks.

Looking around, I've seen cars which are 3 years old/50000 miles and some which are slightly older but fewer miles, which would be better?

Interested to hear your suggestions and thoughts on cars which would be particularly worth looking at.

Don't worry about the tax, go petrol for your mileage and consider petrol Focus or Astra 1.6 - check out cargiant for prices of high mileage ones and see if the lower prices work for you or shop around on Autotrader, plenty at your budget.

As Oldtoffee, and whatever you do avoid automated manual or twin clutch gearboxes if you want a nice drive and a long trouble free and costs effective life from your car.

Both recommendations above are good ones, but I doubt whether any medium size car with a conventional automatic gearbox will do more than 41mpg. I'm very light-footed, but I can't even manage it in a small car with a 1.2 engine and auto gearbox.

I tend to agree with the others. With your mileage you should go for a petrol engined model with a full automatic. Also agree that in general use 41 mpg seems very unlikely. What is your current Toyota? I could see a Starlet doing 41 mpg or more on a long run but not in general day to day running. I would choose the Focus over the Astra as in MHO Ford quality has gone up and Vauxhall’s down in the past decade.

I'd think I'd stick with Toyotas, Hondas or Mazdas for that price. They seem less likely to hit your pocket as they get older.

Thanks for all the replys.

Its a Carina hatchback, actually 16 years old, 41 mpg according to parkers, don't know what it actually does in real life. I'm surprised that 16 years on, (quoted) mpg hasn't gone up at all.

So the general consensus seems to be to stick to (smallish?) petrols. Take the ford focus as an example, in good condition, would consensus be to look for a higher mileage (eg 50000) newer example or much lower mileage, maybe 4-5 years old?

Also been looking at hybrids, prius/civic, obviously have higher mpg and lower tax, are they worth going for?

Keeping clear of main dealer forecourts, £6k will get you a 2009/2010 Focus 1.6 with 30k miles, a 2007 Honda Civic 1.8, a 2010 Nissan Note 1.6, a 2008 Mazda 6 2.0 (same tax as the Focus 1.6) so plenty to choose from so you don't have to spend £8k to get into a 4 year old car.

A Toyota Prius - auto and bulletproof reliability and cheap or no tax - seems ideal..Ideal for city driving. And cheap to service...

Looking at a 09 civic hybrid for £8k, 30k miles. Any issues with these that should be known about?

Only the amazingly ignorant comments you'll receive from Clarksons disciples and other fatheads, recent post on another forum puts cost of new Hybrid batteries @ £10k @ 6 to 10 years..;)

Enjoy it.

I haven't tried a Civic hybrid, but the road tests say they're quite slow. A Prius would be livelier although you don't buy hybrids for outright acceleration!

I point you to the 2011 film 'Horrible Bosses', a badly-titled yet amusing movie:

Detective Hagan: Do you want to explain why you were doing 61 in a 25 zone? One block from the victims house. Just moments after he got shot dead.

Nick Hendricks: I was drag racing. I'm a drag racer.

Detective Samson: You were drag racing.

Nick Hendricks: [nods]

Detective Samson: In a Prius.

Nick Hendricks: I don't win a lot.

Is that true or are you joking? Would the batteries need replacing, if so, I guess that would be quite expensive.

Yes i was being a little sarcastic, hence the smiley.

I suppose eventually the batteries could need replacing, but you've got more chance of finding Lord Lucan than someone who's had to fork out for a set, many of these cars are in taxi use now and covering colossal mileages with no problems.

It would appear that if you ever needed a reconditioned set they would cost about the same as a clutch on a modern car.

What smiley? I can't see one!

As it happens, I think they'd avoid quite a lot of confusion on here e.g. you could be sure when Jamie's joking.

No reply, but the answer is obviously "Yes". I'm glad I asked though, because I would never have guessed. All this time, I thought I was reading messages from PC or mobile phone users with poor keyboard skills!

Give us a chance to go to work John Boy.

Didn't know it was text speak as it were my apologies if it offends anyones sensibilities, but seeing as there is no smiley button as such it usually suffices to get the massage across that one is being a little flippant...apparently not in this case.

Blowed if i'm going to be boringly serious and to the exact point all the time though, so if anyone gets the wronng end of the stick they'll just have to lump it...-;)...-:)))

Sorry, GB. You play such a big part on here it's hard to imagine that you can do a job as well.

I'm not offended by your text speak - I just didn't understand it. As I say, yesterday I did learn something new.

No probs John Boy, just read my post looks like i was half stoned when sent but in fact my PC is definately going though its death throes at the moment and thats the only excuse i have for sending ''massages''...:-))

Actually i think :-) or a variation is a smiley, and ;) is a wink or something along those lines.

what was the thread about?

I don't have a clue if this message will send, every time i send something the PC goes into meltdown, either my dissident political postings mean all the meaningless drivel i write now goes via Langley and/or GCHQ, or i've been spending far too much time at 'Saucy Sarahs Heavy Petting Parlour.com.'
