Hi its the uno man again... thanks for help on previous topic.. replaced distributer cap and spark plugs now getting normal fuel consumption.

But now im gettin yellow stuff on a breather tube that goes from the air filter to engine.. a bit of white crap on the oil filler cap but the engin oil is norm black colour and water in cooling system is perfect clear with no loss... please help? Iv been told condensation????
yellow crap in breather tube fiat uno - smokie
I think it is emulsified oil, rather than crap, which is altogether different.

Similar problems with a Fiesta were diagnosed here as being due to water in the oil, but with no mechanical problems and only very low mileages being covered I was satisfied that it was due to condensation inside the rocker cover never getting burnt off. With longer journeys the problem now seems to have gone away.

Man goes to his garage and reports car runs badly.
Mechanic takes a look, and solves problem.
"What was the cause?" asks Man
"crap in the carburettor" replies the mechanic
"How the h*ll did that get there?" asks Man

or..... how often do I have to do that?

Could be the rating of the oil you are using. API SF/CC was introduced many years ago to combat sludging like this. Most oils I've seen on the shelf are now at API SH/CG* so its un-likely you are using pre SF/CC. * memory not infallible!

But most likely is short journeys or a partially blocked breather.

Hope this helps.

Is this car used every day for sensible length journeys 10 miles plus. Who changed your oil last and what did they put in ??

no gen about 8 ish per day iv had the car 1 year and iv not had the oil changed i top it up with oil but its not the expensive stuff.. but oil is nice and clear
yellow crap in breather tube fiat uno - smokie
Have the oil changed anyway, go to Kwik Fit and ask about their oil change prices. They aren't dear and it is definitely money well spent. (£18 for the cheap stuff, and you don't have to get your hands dirty).

Oh, and drive the car a bit further once a week to steam off the condensation - it really works!.

National do an oil and filter change for £10. Semi synth for 15.

The "yellow crap" in the breather tube is caused by condensation. It usually collects at the top of the engine. Condensation occurs each time you start from cold but is normally evaporated out(and drawn into the engine/combustion chamber)as the engine warms up.Excessive condensation can be caused by:1) running the engine too cool. 2)Doing too many short runs 3)Blockage in the venting system of the crankcase.
Changing the oil more frequently may help but it will not cure the fault.

Yes, it's condensation as Lauriew describes. Usually caused by blocked breathers or engine not reaching normal operating temperature.Might be a thermostat problem.

Some cars are more prone to this than others. I can remember....(Mark, shift this to the 'Nostalgia' thread, quickly!)....in 'Practical Motorist' (early 70s) there was a design for a metal plate which you could fix to the front of the rocker cover on a Vauxhall Viva to deflect cold air from the fan away - warm up the rocker box and thus prevent / reduce 'mayonnaise'. Other tips included making a 'jacket' for the rocker box with felt (aargh!)

The choice of oil will also make a difference - some have more emulsifiers than others. Generally, fresh oil will make things a bit worse as emulsifiers are at their best!

This phenomenon shouldn't be so prevalent nowadays, though with sophisticated control systems. I'd tend to check your breather hoses, thermostat and fan (running constantly?). Also try to give the car an 'Italian Tune Up' regularly on a long run to blast it all out!

If you have had gunge in the breather tube, take it off and comfirm that it is good condition. Then remove the flame trap, clean it and put it back into the tube. If no flame trap, fit one ASAP.

were can i find the following:-??

Blockage in the venting system of the crankcase.

how do i get to this and what is it....???

o and by the way thanks for all your help so far veryone...!

darrenmc,
I am not familiar with the Fiat, but usually there is a valve somewhere in the breather tubes. This maybe a simple "flapvalve" or a more complicated spring loaded job. This is called a "Donaldson Valve". It could be a wire mesh gauze filter within the pipe that only needs washing in petrol or paraffin.
Check also that all vent tubes are in good condition as sometimes they become"pappy" inside as they perish, thus blocking the pipe.check the inside of the aircleaner where these pipes connect, as sometimes this valve can be there.

Sorry I can`t be more helpful.

Don't know about the Uno but my 999 Panda had a similar concern;turned out to be a blockage(of muck)where a vent pipe from the air cleaner joined the inlet manifold;poked it out with a piece of wire and the condenstion dissappeared-at the time I was doing a 20 mile run twice a day with speeds upto 85mph so the oil was hot!

so i can safely say its nothing more sinistar then... and if i give it a good run now and again itl get rid of it..?? Its not gona turn out to be knackered cylinder head...?? ro sum thing stupid..
yellow crap in breather tube fiat uno - lauriew
Darren.
Unless you are having to constantly top up coolant....Then it could be headgasket.
Otherwise check coolant temperature as engine running to cool.
May have to remove cooling fan or disconnect if electric for trial.
yellow crap in breather tube fiat uno - darrenmc
no i dont top it up at all aprt from once a month and then only an inch.. and the coolent is clear.. apart from blue antifreeze colour.... just getin sick of leaning white gunk from oil cap..
yellow crap in breather tube fiat uno - lauriew
Darren, I think you have a leak!
I have never had to top up coolant(unless I had a leak).
If you have header tank, make sure you check level when cold and fill to level mark. This will rise/fall as temp changes but should maintain same level when cold again.
yellow crap in breather tube fiat uno - lauriew
Darren,Its me again.
Sorry, I should have said "expansion tank", not header tank.
yellow crap in breather tube fiat uno - darrenmc
if i have a leak then how do i fix it will it be expensive? the last time it was topped up was several weeks ago and that was only after i completly drained the system and re filled back up to replace the stuff(coolant for the winter).
yellow crap in breather tube fiat uno - lauriew
Darren.
Rather than start dismantling, which should be your last resort, I suggest you do this first.
You need to be sure that you have/not got a leak.
This could be a head gasket that is allowing water to get into the sump, thus contaminating the oil.
There is a device called "Cooling system pressure test kit". Most repair shops will have this, or you may be able to hire it from tool shop.
It consists of a pump(similar to bike pump), with a pressure gauge and various attachments. You can check the pressure cap or attach pump to radiator(with water in) and pump up to system pressure. You then can see if system holds pressure...if not, then you have leak somewhere. Release pressure and start engine with pump attached: a RAPID rise in pressure means head gasket leaking. To cure this, cylinder head has to be removed to replace gasket.
Before doing any of this though, try running engine hotter: remove fan or blank off radiator and monitor temp. and stop before getting too hot. This will either cure condensation or show up leak by making it worse.

thanks im gona try this
