So, a showdown between Merkel and Hollande? . Can't see France winning this one.

The French are right on this one, Germans picking and choosing which EU laws they wish to obey.

Just had to pick myself up off the floor laughing on two counts;

1) We all know there shouldn't be any EU laws. The legality of manufacturing chemicals should be decided by the elected Government of the nation in which said manufacturing is taking place, but more amusingly...

2) The French are probably the worst culprits for ignoring the EU laws they vaunt on others. This is the country whose Ministers respond with 'we didn't get that memo' when Brussells grills them. This is the country whose President banned gypsies from Paris.

Ummm.

Isn't that, in effect, what's happened here?

Instead of one transnational set of standards we have each country doing its own thing, possibly for protectionist reasons. So either Mercs are not sold in France or there needs to be, like in the seventies, different models in every market with consequent inflated cost and trouble in spares/repairs after crossing borders.

But that's good 'cos we've got one over on the eurocrats........

No, we all know EU laws SHOULD be sensible, fair and logical! Setting industrial safety standards is a key area where there should be international legislation.

This is not a discussion over if we should have EU law,

we do have EU law and in this case the German government are happy for Mercedes not to follow it.

Mercedes engineers have shown that the new gas is highly flammable when used in their cars.

The original DT article has been edited to remove the statements from Mercedes that said in their realworld tests where the new gas was sprayed on a hot engine, as often happens in a road accident, the gas ignited, something that didnt happen with r134a.

I wonder why DT removed that bit?

Its a serious safety issue being blindly ignored by the EU eurocrats.

Yup, another evangelical tiff between the eco-fiddlers and the safety nazis at the root of this.

Same thing that gave us DRLs. Safety nazis want lights on, eco-fiddlers agonise about minute emissions increase from continuous light use. Solution? Fit cars with christmas tree lights.

This one looks more interesting, as the eco-fiddlers have managed to get their latest bit of pet legislative trivia through before the safety nazis spotted the problem. I think we'll be needing a plentiful supply of popcorn while this plays out.

I'd forgotten when I posted yesterday that there's another take on this.

The airocn refrigerants are both patented to a large US based multi national chemical company. It has been alleged that, as the protections on R134 expire, the company is keen to get it replaced with the it's newly patented product.

To that end the company has been more than happy to play up the green credentials of the new product and might even have financed eco campaigns. They're not accepting the German results that cast doubt on the new product on grounds of flammability/toxicity.

As ever, follow the money.

Both France and Germany have large carbuilding industries and tifffs like this are usually down to seeking a competitive edge. When the EU were looking to cap (theoretical) CO2 emissions from new cars, France lobbied for a lower limit because they tend to produce small cars, whereas Germany produces luxury/sports cars and would find meeting any limit more challenging than the French carmakers.

France is probably using this as a bartering chip for farm subsidies reform or something. Given France's precarious economic state, I can't see Merkel tolerating any nonsense from Hollande.

The EU's done what it always does; bans things to keep themselves looking busy.

As far as I can work out, Earth survived to this point using the chemicals preferred by the Germans. The sky did not fall down.

It's like when they messed up the paint.
