Automatic transmission - the different types - John Boy

As a current topic shows, there's quite a lot of confusion about the names used by different manufacturers. It's an area which interests me and I've been trying to list them all. Here it is. I'd appreciate any suggestions which will help me to get the list right.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS: The different types

Torque converter Known as Auto, unless they feature Manual override in which case they can be Tiptronic, Geartronic or Autotronic

Continuously variable Known as CVT, Audi Multitronic, Toyota M-drive S

Direct Shift Gearboxes Known as DSG incl Audi S-Tronic

Auto Clutch Manuals Known as M/M, MMT, F1, R-Tronic, Sensodrive, EGS, Easytronic, Durashift, Dualogic (Fiat)

Pedant alert !!!

You can't just use the term "torque converter" - that really just refers to the element replacing the clutch in a conventional manual.

Torque converters can be used with both planetary gear sets and CVTs, to my knowledge.

Almost all brands of torque converter + planetary gears automatics nowadays have a manual mode similar to Tiptronic but with more names than brands!

DSG stands for DUAL shaft gearbox, not direct.

To be honest, it's best to stay away from individual manufacturers' names for transmission types because there can be many names for the same transmission used in different models.

Sniff!

The torque converter can even be used with an ordinary stick shifted gear box.

Well least in commercial stuff like Unimogs.

Also Volvo 'Powershift', which uses a DSG also found in Fords, but they call it something else.

Wife's Peugeot 207 has a conventional Automatic known as "System Porsche". OOOHH, must be good then (it has a manual override)

Durashift on Ford cars, are they all these robotised manuals? I'm aware that the Fusion is such, but is a 2.3l Mondeo auto?

Thanks for the replies. They've made me realise this is more complex than I thought. I've done a bit more research and this is the second version of the list:

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS: The different types available in the UK car market

Torque converter plus planetary gears i.e. Conventional automatics, Known as Auto, unless they feature Manual override in which case they can known as Tiptronic, Geartronic, Autotronic or System Porsche

Continuously variable Known as CVT, Multitronic, M-drive S, e-CVT

Dual Shaft Gearboxes Known as DSG, S-Tronic, Powershift

Auto Clutch Manuals Known as M/M, MMT, F1, R-Tronic, Sensodrive, EGS, Easytronic, Durashift, Dualogic, i-Shift

Automatic transmission - the different types - Avant

DSG stands for Direct Shift (not Shaft) Gearbox (Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe): dual goes with clutch.

Thankyou, Avant.

I was under the impression that Durashift was the name Ford used for their own DSG gearbox, rather than an automated manual gearbox?

It was, the list above is at the best inaccurate and the worst useless,if the public was so concerned about the types of gearbox available then the internet will give all the answer.

Another harsh and pointless comment from Collos there.

John Boy is not going to be publishing this list, it's for his and our interest and amusement.

As HB says, Durashift should be in the DSG section.
