Mercedes - Sat Nav in France - SallyFrance

Am going to Britanny this weekend and then to the South of France in September. The Garmin Sat Nav is a godsend but understand these are banned in France where they have the speed camera alert activated. Is it just a question of deactivating or can they not be used at all? Help!

Speed camera data needs to be deleted from all satnavs before entering France - it's an offence to have camera data there even if it's not being used and only being used for navigation.

According to TomTom

New update: TomTom Speed Camera service becomes Danger Zones in France
TomTom had a meeting with the Road Safety Ministry to clarify the situation regarding new and upcoming legislation. As a result, TomTom is introducing a 100% compliant Danger Zones service available in a free download for compatible products.

That sounds like a parallel to Snooper's High Risk Zones - which uses the fact that authorities justify speed cameras being positioned at accident zones to reduce accidents and there's no legislation, in the UK at least, to prevent accident risk points being identified.

Don't panic - I have lived in Brittany France for nearly four years and have several sat-navs on various vehicles all still have the speed camera databases in them. The locals take absolutely no notice whatsoever of this stupid rule, regarding it as yet another moneymaking scheme for the government. If you are at all worried about getting stopped and asked about the contents of your sat-nav just remember that the police and gendarmes are not authorised to enter or search or mess about with the contents of your car without a warrant, but the douane (customs) police can. If you are asked about it just say that the sat-nav does not contain speed camera data-it's as simple as that.

Activate the password feature that most sat-navs seem to have if you like, then nobody but you can gain access to it.

Remember that the French police and mobile gendarmes are introducing unmarked cars equipped with onboard radar that cruise the autoroutes at the speed limit and if you overtake them - snap- you are nicked.

No wonder the press reports everyone is so pessimistic in France and the government is so unpopular....

That is somewhat reassuiring but you are a 'Local' and probably driving a French registered LHD car and not seen as a cash cow tourist. Everything else you say is fair comment and most helpful

anyone old enough to remember the old song the bold gendarmes?

''we run 'em in (x3)

because we are the bold gendarmes''

Love france but you need to know the rules and develop a Gallic shrug
