Anyone out there driving the Passat CC with the conventional torque converter automatic? Not many on auto trader but they do exist! Just interested about reliability and performance. Great looking car but too many DSG horror stories and I need auto box

Cheers

An oddball automatic-what could inspire more confidence?

The Internet magnifies problems with common items.

Yes the Internet magnifies problems with everything not just cars.
I just want more info on the CC mated to the ( I assume ) 09G auto gearbox
Your comment isn't really of any use to me

It was on my short list of cars 18 months ago when changing. The Tiptronic did get better reviews and seemingly less problems than the DSG but not by enough to make me choose it in the end.

I have a 2.0TDI with DSG Passat CC, Its been utterly fine in 70K miles of mixed motoring.

44MPG and no problems to report.

a while ago sombody was on this forum screaming about their Nissan that had suffered engine failure, but that doesn't mean all Nissans will be afflicted.

VW are not idiots, these gearboxes, like any complex piece of equipment, can fail, rarely, but when this happens, there is such an uproar on forums like this.

I had a SIERRA 1.6L once, long time ago, and had to replace the transmission on that. so what . . .

It's not the failure that's causing the uproar, it's the attitude of VW UK.

The uproar is because VW DSG transmissions are subject to recall in every country of the world except the UK.

RT, thats a wild and inaccurate generalistation. There is presently NO DSG recall in Europe or the Mid East.

To clarify, WV 7-spd DSG gearboxes, model code DQ200, have been the subject of recalls/extended warranties in China, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia.

This has now been extended to Australia and New Zealand in the last few days, following an organised group of affected owners in Australia complaining to VW, which was also covered by a tv news station.

In terms of scale, its comparable to the 'global' recalls by Toyota and Honda in recent years. However, VW's handling has been inconsistent, compared to their Japanese competitors. The Far Eastern region recall was blamed on local manufacturing of DSG gearboxes, with the comment that other regions, including Aus and NZ, would be unaffected as their DSG was sourced from Germany. However, VW have now blamed the Aus/NZ recall on a 'unique' set of environmental factors - climate, humidity, temperature and road/traffic factors. It's a really wishy-washy explanation, frankly, and doesnt answer their previous claim that German-sourced DSG was meant to be unaffected.

The major risk for VW now is that European owners who experience premature DSG failure, will find little to reassure them from this rather reluctant recall and unconvincing explanations...

Thanks guys. Sulphur man is correct it's just too wishy washy. I've been in dsgs as a passenger and they do impress me. It's just too much if a risk IMO, even a local vw garage owner/mechanic said to me and I quote "they are a great piece of technology. I have replaced the wifes mechatronic TWICE but they're still great!!??

In comparison, I don't see as many issues on merc 5g / 7g boxes or even the less desired brands with aisin supplied boxes

Right guys
Like earlier comments state, DSG really can't be that problematic. I want to be proven wrong and all comments are welcome. One 'problem' I'm reading everywhere is the delay when pulling away, stop/starting. I'm not putting dsg owners down but isn't this made clear by VW? It's to do with the brake lights being linked to the dsg in some way for selecting gears? Also, is there some sense in reverse and second gear being on the same shaft and when coming to a stop if the car is not brought to stationary stop rather than coast the dsg is confused I.e will the driver slow down or will he/she want to reverse???
As for the mechatronic unit, well, the car must be purchased with a decent warranty that covers this. Therefore only vw will cover this based on my experience with flappy paddle semi autos.
