Nissan X Trail Sport 2.2 2001 - Nissan X Trail front coil spring replacement - emilyhj

I have recently bought a 2001 Nissan X Trail 2.2 Sport and took it to my local garage for a oil change. Whilst there they said it needed a new near side front coil spring so they replaced it for me. I then got a tow bar fitted at another garage and when I collected the car they told me that the new spring was unsafe to drive with as it was not original and had only 3 coils, where as the original Nissan spring has 5 coils. They pointed out that the car was not level so would be even more dangerous if I was to tow with it. I returned it to my local garage and they said it was completely safe and was only uneven due to a bush on the passenger side that would need replacing soon. They are happy to replace either coil spring so that they match but don't think I need to at all. Who should I believe!? Is the car safe to drive? Should I have one of the coil springs replaced so they match? if so can it be replaced with an unoriginal (priced at £35) or should it be an original Nissan spring (over £100)?

If one spring has 5 coils and the other 3 then there is a problem if 5 coils is the Nissan spec then only a spring with 5 coils should be fitted, sounds to me that they have found a spring in the garage that is roughly the same size and fitted that personnaly I would not only change the spring but also change garages..

Your garage should have fitted an original Nissan spring or an aftermarket one that is exactly the same.

If the original had 5 coils and the new one only 3, then the new spring must have a different spring rate in order to support the vehicle weight. This will change the charcteristics of the suspension on that side. So now you have two sides on the same axle with different characteristics instead of being the same. Also you don't know if the new spring rate is suitable for use with the original shock settings (or vice versa if you prefer).

Expanding somewhat:

Actually it is possible to design a spring with 3 coils to have the same rate as one with 5 coils, but in order to do so the wire diameter must be smaller. This brings other problems - for the same amount of suspension travel each coil must compress further, stresing the smaller diameter wire even more. Smaller diameter wire will be "weaker" - it'll have a lower fracture threshold. Smaller diameter wire ends may not sit in the seats as well. And you can bet that cheaper springs will be made with cheaper wire (as well as having less wire in the spring reducing cost still further).

As the X Trail is ostensibly an "off road" vehicle, problems could be further compounded if you ever actually give the suspension any serious work to do.

I would always caution anyone who is changing the characteristics of their suspension tobuy from a reputable source with a brand name (koni, Bilstein etc) .Spring and damper rates needto be matched to provide proper ride and handling quality. Poorly matched springs and dampers can also have a devastating impact on stopping distance as the suspension may struggle to keep the tyre in proper contact with the road under emergency braking conditions.

Get a proper spring fitted and, as suggested, find yourself a new garage.

Get a proper spring fitted

Get two proper springs fitted. They should be replaced in pairs as the old, tired one will behave differently to the new one which can lead to some "interesting" handling effects......usually when it's most important that the thing behaves predictably.

The fact that the garage were happy to replace only the one spring speaks volumes about their competance.

I have yet to see a garage, main agents change two springs when only one requires changing I slightly agree with your reasoning but in practice its not really nessessary .

This subject has been studied extensively by chassis engineers at a Midlands Premium manufacturer (one of those engineers went to this company with me from uni).

I can assure you that there is no need to change springs in pairs, unless they exhibit excessive corrosion or show any signs of cracking.
Similarly, this manufacturer no longer changes shocks in pairs unless the mileage is above 35k miles.

First of all, speaking for anyone reading your post, we can't understand why the garage doing the oil change had to tell you that a front spring needed changing! Driving an X-Trail on a broken front spring must be an horrendously noisy and uncomfortable experience. You would have booked it in for a new spring before the oil change! I have to agree with TeeCee that broken springs should be changed in pairs, not just to ensure comfortable handling, but that if one spring has broken, then as sure as anything, the other side will break within the next thousand miles. And if they're going to change the broken spring for one which even looks completely different, then that's all the more reason to change both sides. The X-Trail is a heavy motor; it needs the correct front springs fitted to avoid excessive roll on sharp bends.

I had a front spring break on a Laguna replaced one spring 100k later still was ok.

If the spring broke near the end apart from the car becoming very slightly of balance you would never notice in normal use.You find as already stated garages do not change springs or shochabsorbers in pairs no need to these days ..

Had a front spring break on my Ford Mondeo several years ago. Went to see the chap at my local, friendly, independent garage and asked him what were were talking about, changing one spring or two. He replied that there was only a need to change the broken one, so I told him to go ahead. No problems at all. Handling didn't change and car wasn't lop-sided.

The front spring the other side did subsequently break but that was about three years and 50,000 miles later. Had that one replaced at this later time, too.

I'm self employed these days and have a Cit Dispatch van. Front right spring broke when vehicle only 4 years old and 40k. I changed the broken spring myself (using an OE replacement). The vehicle is now 10 years old and 80k up. No problems with th other side.

I took my own advice (or rather, the advice of fellow Professional Automotive Research and Development Engineers from a Chassis Engineering background).

Even back in my rallying days, we had a couple of spring breakages and only replaced the broken one.
