Air con - On or Off ? - Bycro
Hi all,

Does anyone know if it is better to run air con all year. I was told that if you do this it will work more efficiently and you will avoid a build up of bacteria and other undesirable contaminants .

All year - as well as cooling air in Summer it dehumidifies moist air so even more useful in Autumn, Winter and Spring.

Running it all year helps stop the seals drying out and reduces gas loss, maintaining it's efficiency longer.

It won't work as less than about 4 degrees C because it freezes internally, blocking the flow, but it has sensors to stop that automatically.

Have you any proof of that, or is it an urban myth?

I would've thought that running it all the time would make it liable to support bacteria in the wet parts.

No - I'm not a research engineer !!

Yes, leave it on all the time all through the year.

And I think HJ himself advises this in connection with preventing the seals from drying out etc.

My last 4 cars have had aircon / climate, and I leave the aircon OFF unless I need it to cool the interior, or to quickly demist. I do try and run the aircon on full cold once a month or so for 15 / 20 minutes to get the refrigerant circulating.

All of those cars have done 3+ years / 30-odd thousand miles+ in my possession and have never needed regassing or shown any problems

Same here never leave the aircon on, just use it as required, or once a week or so for a couple of minutes just to keep the seals lubricated.

Over the 4.5 years i keep a car, i have never yet had a aircon unit fault.

if you are concerned about bacteria then run the heater at both full hot and full cold for some time.

I actually think running aircon continuously is both unhealthy and wasteful on energy.

This is the correct use of A/C , as stated in car handbooks.

I do this too - makes sure all the seals are still good and I can check it still works in winter/spring in time to get any faults fixed or a top-up for summer.

My son leaves his on all the time I use as required neither of us has never had a problem but running all the time will have an adverse effect on the economy of the vehicle.

My car has automatic climate control so I leave it on all the time at 19 degrees summer and winter. My wife's car is just switched on when needed, although I do try to run it regularly.

Air-con? Climate control? WTF?

Just don't leave a window open when parked?

Would rather have picnic tables built-in....

It's not a picnic if you just sit in the car !

So does mine, and I feel the cold so keep it at 22, so I try to remember to put it to 'LOW' about once a month. This is seriously unpleasant in January!

I buy my cars at around 4yrs old and keep them for at least another 10yrs 'serviced' only by the MoT and haven't had a problem so far....

My Volvo (and I'm sure others) has climate control which works well with or without the Aircon switched on. It's one of the best systems I've come across.

My dials stay at 21 or 22 throughout the year and the fan speed/air direction is determined automatically. If I need ice cold aircon on a hot day, I just press the Aircon ON button.

So many people fail to use climate control in the way it was designed, by for example whacking it down to 16C on a hot day then after half an hour they feel cold and either whack it up to 23C or switch it off!

As others have said, it's vital to run the aircon condensor regularly to eliminate potential problems.

Climate control should turn the air-con on or off automatically as required - overriding the air-con status is reverting to manual control, at least of the air-con !

Yes.... and No.

Overriding the aircon in the Volvo just turns the condensor off.

You are left with air which is either heated or ambient. It is directed where and at what fan speed is appropriate (e.g first thing to the windscreen, then later, face vents) without altering the settings to manual.

So it still cools and warms effectively depending on where the temperature is set, without having to adjust any settings

But I agree that full CC involves the aircon.

I had a very unpleasant journey with a driver who felt that heat should be directed to the face level vents at maximum heat and fan speed or turned completely off when it got too hot.

Resulting in fried eyeballs and freezing feet.
