Ford Mondeo Estate - Should I replace the DMF now or wait? - fronyoshea

I've recently been getting a 'honking' sound when I change down gears (usually from 3rd to 2nd). My local garage thinks it sounds like a dual mass flywheel problem and says that it will cost a minimum of £1,000 to replace/ sort. My car is a 2006 with 110,000 on the clock so I don't really want to spend that kind of money on it. As the honking is occasional and there is no other noticeable effect on the car, I am wondering whether to just carry on with it and hope I get another year until I can afford another car. If I do nothing, is it likely to deteriorate and could it cause more damage to the car by not replacing the DMF now?

Any advice welcome!

Only thing it will damage is your starter motor. You could leave it but one day it wont start due to said starter motor damage.

Here's my story....

2007 FORD MONDEO ZETEC TDCI 130 ESTATE

144,566 miles no problem apart from it sounds like a tractor.

4 weeks ago clutch went.

New DMF £800 Mr Clutch in Bristol.

2 days later I noticed a coil symbol flashing amber.

3 days later at around 2500rpm middle lane M4 to Swindon, engine stutters, coughs, black smoke, coil light flashes, loss of power and a rather annoyed bulk tipper on my rear having to brake.

Limped off the M4 at Jnt 17, 1500rpm engine cuts out, black smoke. Turn ignition on and off, restarts, then again anything up to 1500rpm I had to repeat the process.

Got it back to Mr Clutch, they checked it, no problems but was told TDCI's are known for problems.

Got it back to local garage, by this time its really bad, lots of black smoke, £400 later still cant find a fault, another £150 to get it towed to a "diesel injector" specialist in Bristol to be told it needed 4 injectors, £1500 thanks very much.

Tomorrow I'm taking it down to a local breakers yard who's offered me £200 for it.

Gutted.

I have been told a few times that once the DMF goes it leads to other problems with these TDCIs.

I read somewhere it'll turn into a money pit.

The problems could also be due to a frayed or dislodged injection wiring loom which runs very close to the top pulley.

....but the specialists at DTM Fuel in Bristol, who charged £163 excl VAT for some diagnostic checks on the injectors would have picked up on that.....right?

....why do I feel like I have the word muppet appearing on my forehead....

I have spent some money on this car since I bought it in 2010 with 56k on the clock. Its had a new rear shocks, new starter motor, new DMF, recently serviced + 2 new tyres then this....

Scrap it, or throw more money at it and try and fix it....?

Injectors are normally the first thing to check on a TDCi. What the heck your local garage spent £400 doing heaven only knows.

You can get them reconditioned for about £100 an injector if you shop around..

I can't imagine that your 'injector' problems are related to the DMF/clutch that you had replaced.

But really - you went to Mr Clutch???
