Volvo V70 - swirl linkage - big jaz

Has any one heard of a problem with the swirl linkage to the 2.4D 183 engine. I have owned my current car since 2005 and this is the 4th replacement kit I have had to fork out for. At £184 a time it is becoming quite a bore. I do not notice any difference in performance. Therefore I was wondering what the function of this is.

Don't know this car but a lot of diesels have swirl flaps and they don't make a great of difference to the performance they are there to reduce emmissions, a lot of people have removed them with little effect, whether its legal to do so or not I don't know, I'm sure someone will be along who does.

Thanks. I presume the MOT will prove whether or not it will be required

This seems to be a very common problem with this engine - the linkage can be seen flopping around at the front of the engine.

The good side of the problem is that the flaps fail open and the only apparent effect is a rougher idle and possibly a less good low speed response - although most people would hardly notice the difference. MOT smoke performance will be unaffected and at least the flaps stay attached to the engine...

The less good side is that when the vehicle meets a Volvo dealer, the fault shows up as a logged defect and in usual m o r o n i c style they will slavishly replace the actuator before doing any other (useful) work. Costs are what one would expect from Volvo nowadays - if you have to ask...

This and a few other faults have been around on the D5 engine for too long now. Volvo owners suffer from the consequences of low market penetration with a resulting shortage of pattern spares, pattern diagnostic software and good independents. Contrast with VAG. (Try an eBay search on Volvo spares, followed by Volkswagen spares and compare the number of hits).

Even an engine oil change costs an arm and a leg on these engines (no multi-sourcing of oil brands with a ludicrous volume of oil required). If you want one of these cars, be aware of the cost of keeping it running. Diesel savings are unlikely to be realised with this engine.

I occasionally get a lift in one of these & thought what a pleasant car it was. Considered it would be a good replacement for the Passat when it gets longer in the tooth.

Needless to say i've now crossed it off the list.

Thanks again for your knowledgeable input 659.

OK I know its a while bac k... but you had your moan without answering the question!

I switched back to Volvo after a few years with a Land Rover Discovery... I have a V70 (previously had 144, 244, 240, 760 and 850). My Disco cost an average of £2k EVERY YEAR for repairs! Plus £450 for the annual service in 2015!

The V70 is reliable... it pulls my heavy caravan better than the Disco; my annual service is under £300 and I get free Volvo Breakdoiwn Assist thrown in plus a loan car!

And I'bve checked - otrher than tyres my annual maintenance costs (brakes etc) has been less that £400!

Find youirself a decent main dealer and stop dissing Volvo!

Ooh! You do realise firstly you're replying to a 9 year old thread and secondly no car manufacturer is above criticism. Unless you're being ironic and I've missed that.
