Jeep Grand Cherokee - LPG Availability - scot2go2

I recently contacted ASDA by email who are about to open a new supermarket in Dumfries, asking whether they intend to sell LPG at the new included service station. My enquiry generated a phone call from a member of their staff who informed me verbally that NO LPG facility would be provided.... and furthermore ASDA were seriously considering REMOVING all present LPG pumps at their existing stores.

I explained that LPG is a greener solution than either Petrol or Diesil but he stated that this was an economy measure and could offer no further help.

Needless to say I am unhappy with this news as the only other two LPG providers in this area hold a virtual monopoly and subsequently charge whatever takes their fancy with BP the more expensive followed very closely by Gulf. If ASDA does carry out this action then it will involve further mileage searching for a garage that offers this fuel.

I had my Jeep converted way back when the then Labour Gov were promising all kinds of benefits for this fuel... but like most politicians idea it was another lie. If only we had the same level of LPG availability that Europe has.

LPG conversion was only ever a short-term benefit - LPG for cars is cheap because it's a surplus by-product from oil production and there's surplus from domestic and portable needs for LPG - it's low taxation level is simply to encourage motorists to use the spare product rather than see it burnt off as flares.

Don't expect Asda, other supermarkets or any other filling stations to supply anything that doesn't generate profits for them.

I see a Jet and Brogans at Dumfies but not much cheaper than the nearby BP.

Very cheap at Calor at Ayr, a little cheaper at Calor Carlisle and reasonable at Morrisons Kilmarnock or Hamilton.

Morrisons is the supermarket down south that sells LPG, not cheap by any means but better priced than the BP as expensive as you can stand sites.

We buy ours from independents usually, currently 68ppl in the midlands.

Have you thought about setting you own place up maybe with a farmer and helping him run it?

As I'm sure you know running a LPG vehicle requires a good deal of logistical planning. Sadly you seem to be in an area of poor availability. My suggestion is that you have a additional bigger tank fitted to your jeep so that you don't need such frequent fills. My 2.5 Xtrail gets about 150miles on the tiny toroidal tank I have fitted but I live in Essex which has many locations. Plus I google in advance for locations when planning trips out of my known areas. My favourite is ex Total garages now Shell. One near Marks Tey is pretty competitive on price. LPG is still a great way to run a big thirsty petrol car.

It's not difficult to see why companies are reluctant to invest in facilities that cater for LPG vehicles. It's a prety shaky industry whose raison d'etre relies on a tax break that could be withdrawn in the near future. With the vast majority of new cars being unsuitable for conversion (either directr injection petrol or diesel), prospects for growth are very limited.

This is all good news for existing LPG users because the smaller the LPG slice of the market, the less attention it attracts from the chancellor. LPG's 'green' credentials are based on 1980's comparisons ands are now pretty marginal, so the best hope is to lie low and not get noticed!

Its people i can't understand, they have a perfectly good petrol car, well mainatained they know it inside out.

Its a bit thirsty but is a lovely car to drive, possibly has a real auto box and a sweet quiet engine and is known for indefinate durability.

Invest £1500 to enable it to run at the same overall cost as Diesel euroclone and keep that lovely car for years? not on your nelly....but happy to pay X thousands more to upgrade their present car to one that apparently does 10mpg more and loses £2k the second they register it and is ridiculously complicated to boot.
