If we p/x our car for a newer one at a dealership can we remove the tax from our old car and reclaim it,we would have to buy tax for the new one and we have only just renewed it.

As long as the dealer is aware of that.

We have done negotiations and tax was never mentioned in the px price they offered us

The dealer will be unable to cash in the tax disc, but may have included it's value in the part exchange price as they can sell the car with the tax included and this obviously enhances the value of the car to a future buyer. You need to agree with them whether this is the case, or not. There is no other answer to your question, I'm afraid.

For both the last two cars I traded in, the dealers seemed surprised that I hadn't already removed the tax disc before handling the car over. They were quite happy for me to remove them.
