New MOT- another query - concrete

There has been much discussion about the new MOT. I cannot decide what to do for the best. My car is in excellent condition at 7 years old with 165K miles. It has sailed through previous tests and would do so again. Dealer maintained and well kept. However, 2 years ago SWMBO did for a door when a bollard jumped in front of her at Sainsbury's (that's her story anyway). Entire new door fitted. Since then, everytime I turn on the ignition after the usual 'Fasten Seatbelt' there is a beep and a 'Lights Failure' message flashes up, it goes off as soon as the engine is started. All the lights work perfectly and have done all the time since this started. Door fitter could not find a problem, main dealer cannot find a problem, so as it really does not bother me I just ignore it. What will new MOT make of this? Surely, if the warning is false and the lights work perfectly then the car is roadworthy and this is just an electronic glitch. The car is a Skoda Superb 1.9PD TDi. Anyone have any ideas either about the MOT or a cure for the 'fault'. Cheers Concrete

I had an intermittent fault with an emissions warning light and was originally told by the main dealer (Suzuki) that if the light stayed on at start up then this would be an automatic MOT fail. This was before the new regs had been introduced. Since then they have told me that the independent MOT garage they use now say that if the light stays on but the emissions are "pass" then all is OK. I haven't tested this operation in practice as my MOT is not due and I can clear the warning light, although it does have a mind of its own that I believe is due to some glitch unrelated to emission issues. Hope this helps.

If it started when you changed the door then the wiring loom in the door is different to the old one.

I would try and get a VCDS scan from a specialistgarage and see exactly what the error is.

Thanks for comments so far.

I checked with the door fitter and he used the all the wiring and the trim from the existing door. The new door was a frame and a skin. Only needed because SWMBO dented it right where the crash protection is and thus it could not be beaten out nor filled. It has baffled most so far because everything works and checks out through the software too. Just hope the MOT (main dealer again) tester is understanding. At least it will probably be the same technician that could not find the fault anyway. Not due until Novemeber but I will post results. Cheers Concrete

Just a thought as those things tend to be a bit loaded in the toys department.

It doesn't have a "puddle light" and / or a red warning lamp on the door by any chance.......that now isn't working?

Hello TeeCee, it has 'puddle lights' but on the underside of the wing mirrors and these are working fine. They have reflectors on the inside of the door openings, not lights. After the door fitter checked it, I had it checked by the main dealer during an annual service and no problem could be found. It has passed 2 MOT's since then, so all the lights are working fine. I just don't want to lose this great car to an MOT failure which has nothing to do with raodworthyness, yet no-one can find a fault to fix. It does not make any sense whatsoever. But, do we expect sense from a government system? Cheers Concrete

If all the mandatory exterior lights are working in accordance with the mot requirements, then you have nothing to worry about.Any warning system that tells you that there is a light malfunction is not part of the mot test.hth

I hope you are correct. I got the impression from previous posts that warning lights, if fitted had to indicate correctly or they can fail the MOT. Perhaps someone has chapter and verse on this. I agree that roadworthyness should be the key aim of an MOT. Cheers Concrete

Thanks Tom, if this is the current standard then the car should be ok. No mention of lighting system warning lights anywhere. The 'fault' could even be missed anyway, it is only on for a few seconds after the 'fasten seatbelt' warning. Cheers for the help. Concrete

It may be it's supposed to do that as a check. What's the handbook say?
