VW Golf mk 5 - screeching & cutting out - Gica

my vw golf mk 5 (7&1/2yrs old) screeches when I engage the clutch and then to get it moving I have to rev the car like mad to get it going otherwise it cuts out.

When the car is moving, accelerate hard in a high gear. If the engines revs rise faster than they should, given the rate at which the car is accelerating, it suggests a worn clutch slipping.

Forgot about that one, mind you last time I had clutch slip was on an Austin Maxi back in the 80's !
