I'm observing the insurance claim car hire scam via a friend. She had parked her car in a restaurant car park while having lunch. An announcement was made, "Would the owner of car number..." etc go to the car park. Another woman had reversed her car into hers and scratched the valence. It wasn't much at all and my friend said that she would get her son to fix it, but the other woman played the 'good guy' and insisted that it go through the insurance company. Thus my friend has been driving around in an almost new hire car for a month now - all for a scratch that her son could have fixed in a few minutes.
I've got far worse 'supermarket' dings on my car and prefer not to have the bother.
