Audi A3, 2litre TFSI Sports Cabriolet - New Audi Oil Change - Galvin2

Car purchased 31st May 2012. I've done 4872 miles to date.

The Service Indicator tells me (as expected) that the first service will be end of May 2014.

However, it is now showing an Oil Change due at the end of May this year. In both cases I will cover a lot less mileage than the fall back figures of 19,000 miles and and 9,000 miles (see above).

I planned to change the oil and filter myself. If I do, will I invalidate the Warranty given that the Service Indicator will not have been re-set? If I approach the Dealer they may be bound to insist on their doing it (at a cost near £90).

Any thoughts please.

You paid £20K+ for a brand new car and now grumbling about an oil change @ £90............

You have lost £5K in depreciation, the £90 is chocken feed.

Sorry but you are missing the point and I'm not grumbling but asking for advice.

Also £90 is not chicken feed for a job I can do myself in 15 mins. plus I have already bought the filter and oil.

I hope someone else can please give me a useful reply.

I doubt if this job can be done in 15 mins.On most Audi models access to the sump drain plug requires removal of the complete engine undertray.Do you have the reqd tools to do the job?Have you bought the oil and filter from Audi dealer ,so there is no problem with warranty.?Also the service/oil light will need to be reset with diagnostic equipment.Bottom line is how much are you going to save by not using dealer?

My useful reply is:

If you diy and then have a warranty claim on the engine , Audi will be perfectly within their rights to dosown you.. I assume you are not an experienced mechanic. So you are not a "competent person" under the law.

Frankly you sound like "penny wise, pound foolish". Save £90 and risk a new engine at £6,000?

Absolute stupidity.

If you can't afford it, why buy it.

So stupid I assume this is another windup.

Audi first service @ £90, have i slipped into a time warp are we back in 1976, if so why is my hair still grey..;)

Or is that £90 the price of the presumably liquid platinum oil only.

I have a bit more sympathy for the original poster - it's his car to do what he likes with and the VAG service shedules have not distinguished themselves in terms of long term benefits to the owner.

I bought my Superb with the balance of a manufacturer's warranty. I also decided that it would be in the best interests of long term ownership to make an oil and filter change before the warranty expired. I dont buy oil or filters from VAG (not on my list of favoured sources) - and they don't make them anyway.

Obviously, the oil has to be to spec and the filter reputable - Bosch and Mann & Hummel I have found, through sectioning and testing when in the business, to be the best. I would defy VAG to detect an oil change in a diesel if the correct oil had been used, although the soot loading might be a bit light.

As far as the filter is concerned, I simply saved the OE element I took out until the car was out of warranty. If the engine had become the subject of a warranty claim, the old element would have gone back in.

Sometimes, you have to treat less-favoured traders with the trading practices they apply to their customers...

Changing the oil on a VAG car is not "a 15 minute job", even if you suck it out.
