Apart from avoiding short runs from cold starts, is there anything else I can do to protect the DPF on my BMW 520d (177)? Will the use of premium grade fuel improve the life of DPF? And what about the grade of engine oil?

You need to make sure that you use low ash spec oil. The brand of diesel you choose is not worth worrying about since you can't verify any differences in the composition.

Other than that, don't worry.

+1 to the above. Use the oil specified in the owner's manual, and use whatever brand of diesel you have a loyalty card / money-off voucher for.

If the car gets a run on open roads for a distance of more than 10 - 15 miles or so a couple of times per month, that will be enough for the DPF to regenerate.

There's no need to thrash the engine, or give the car an 'Italian tune up' as is often suggested -- these just create more soot. The DPF system is designed to work under normal driving conditions.

After 25000 miles of pootling around in an E60 that already had 100 000 miles on the clock I got the dreaded orange picture but one tank of diesel with a branded fuel cleaner additive and the message has disappeared.
