Kia EV3 - World Car of the year 25 - Steveieb

Very impressive for a company that a few years ago made cars that people bought as a cheap alternative to the mainstream manufacturers

Well that depends on how impressive or relevant you feel such an award is.

I'm not familiar with the world car of the year, but am fairly familiar with the European car of the year, specifically some of the decidedly mediocre cars that have won that particular accolade over the years!

Having just looked up the World Car, maybe worth pointing out that a Kia won in 2020, a Hyundai won in 2022, another Hyundai won in 2023 and a Kia won last year. So maybe not that much of a surprise that a car from the Hyundai/Kia stable won again his year

Sounds like the World Series baseball always being won by a US team.

Not really very interesting but here you go:

Only 4 from South Korea.

.....World Car Awards strives to ensure global balance amongst the jurors so that no one region dominates the votes and outcome. To ensure that balance, the number of jurors appointed to represent any country/region is limited and the numbers are adjusted from time to time to reflect market circumstances.......

16 from USA, 15 from China, 5 from 'England'. Presumably very few are sold in Scotland or Wales.

Rather than worrying about conspiracies and bias has anyone considered the possibility that the Kia EV3 is just an exceptionally good all round car?

It certainly seems to get rave reviews from anybody and everybody, looks good, is priced sensibly and comes with a 7 year warranty. Not sure what there is not to like.

Not exactly a 'looker' though, and those sight lines don't look good either. I think they've had too much influence from parent company Hyundai, who's cars (IMHO) are not nice looking at all now, well before KIA started to go that way a few years ago. I doubt if it is 'cheap' either. Kia haven't been like that for some time now.

Indeed so. Am I unduly sad that such cars are not rolling off UK production lines?

Well, I quite like its looks. But then I really liked the looks of my Peter Schreyer designed Audi A6. If you ever see one today they still look modern in comparison with its three-box-style BMW and MB contemporaries. I suspect it's his influence.

I did spend a few days last September presenting EV3 to customers at preview events at dealers.
I only managed to drive it off a raised platform onto a showroom floor (it was moved from dealer to dealer in a covered transporter) so can’t comment on how it performs, but a good test of a new car is the response it gets from dealer sales teams.
They were universally positive about it and sold a few on the preview evenings without test drives.

A friend has a Kia ev6, previously he drove a Tesla. Both company cars of course. His opinion is the Kia is a far nicer and better car all round, particularly interior build quality and ease of use of dash, controls etc. they have certainly come a long way since the 90s.

Now the EV6 does look easy on the eye whereas the EV3 is far too 'boxy' for me, not that I'll ever be purchasing one (an electric vehicle) as just not my thing! ...

... I see that Polestar are shedding 15% of the R&D(?) workforce citing 'market conditions' ...

After an intensive competitive tender by the Government Car Pool the office chose the Kia Nero EV and Hybrid In total, the government’s central fleet of 680 plug-in vehicles includes 449 examples of the plug-in hybrid Kia Niro, along with 110 of the Sportage PHEV.

Not sure what's going on with the 'square wheel' look. Now that non-round steering wheels are back in fashion maybe trying to make the road wheels look non-round is the next stage.

I know the road wheels have to be round to function properly, but there's no physical reason why a car can't be styled so it looks like the wheels are square. But I don't think it looks good.

The square wheel look seems to hint at a degree of off-road-ness, or at least SUV-ness, since ordinary hatchbacks and sports cars these days still have round wheelarches. Maybe all this goes back to the original WW2 Jeep, which had angular front mudguards, although it had round ones at the rear!
