Audi A4 - PETROL OR HYBRID - geek84

Hi Folks

I'm thinking of buying a new car, but can't decide whether to go for a petrol or hybrid car.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Thank You

It depends on whether you do enough miles to justify the extra cost of a hybrid.. Look at how many miles you do per annum, how many years you'll own the car, the MPG of the two models and how much they cost.

A little bit of maths will give you the answer.

I think Audi are no longer selling the A4 in the UK - any nearly new deals around?

It's how I found a stonking deal with my Swace as they were stopping the model. Re hybrid - certainly I've loved mine with the Toyota hybrid gubbins although be aware mpg is very dependant on ambient temperature. Colder is usually worse, as per an electric car the batteries don't perform as well when cold although they don't like excessive heat either - er ok in the UK!!

Beware the extra car tax for the first few years for any where the list (not discounted purchase) price is over £40k. Not a problem for me, but an A4...........

Pretty sure there never was an A4 hybrid.

Pretty sure there never was an A4 hybrid.

Gone is the 40 trim from the 2024 model year, leaving a 261-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 12-volt hybrid system as the only available powertrain for the 2025 model. In typical Audi fashion, all-wheel drive comes standard. (USA)

So potentially not in the UK according to Audi UK website.

I think hybrids are an automotive evolutionary dead end. The reasons for having a car with two separate propulsive mechanisms are getting fewer by the day. Why do you apparently exclude diesels and EVs from your choices? It's impossible to suggest anything without knowing your approximate annual mileage, the type of journeys, your annual income and what percentage of it you are prepared to spend per annum on renting it, or on depreciation if you are buying it.

Never heard of a 12-Volt hybrid. The pointless Mild Hybrids have all been 48 volts (even the the Suzuki Ignis with a tiny battery under the passenger seat), what advantage 12 volts it would give a 261 bhp turbo petrol must be mind numbingly tiny.

Or was this in the 1st April edition of the paper/magazine?

I used to think that after driving a thoroughly hateful Auris at work several times, not nice at all (or even economical).

Then we drove and bought a Yaris and that is simply brilliant. Without a doubt quicker (when needed) than the Fabia it followed and instead of the 48 mpg the Fabia averaged over 6 years the Yaris has so far averaged 72 mpg in the same use so far. And the Yaris was no more expensive than a similarly specced up Fabia.

Truth is we like it so much we have another Toyota Hybrid on order. No more expensive than similar sized ICE cars and will still refuel in minutes instead of the hours an EV can take.

Until the charging network is infinitely better we will not be buying an EV and now the Gov have said that "certain" hybrids will remain on sale until 2035 (presumably that means no more mild hybrids on sale) I should hopefully be able to drive longer distances until my 80's with no charging mullarky.

Both Ignis and swift use 12v 10ah battery's for there hybrid component....battery is about the size of a average briefcase and does indeed live under the front passenger seat.

Do I need to have a thing like that under my bottom. What happens when it melts down at 70 mph.?

A: Do you have a mild hybrid?

B: It won't melt down

C: Do you intend to drive from the passenger seat?

D: If it does for some reason catch fire ( and it really won't) simply turn off your heated seat and enjoy the free heat :)

Seriously though in my current new shape swift I can barely feel the "electric assistance " but in my previous 48v mild hybrid Vitara I could really feel when the electric component kicked in, quite a weird sensation if you've never experienced it....

Just out of interest which Toyota hybrid have you got on order?

Except a try in an awful very early Prius I hadn't driven a Toyota based full hybrid until I test drove and bought my Swace (Toyota gen 5 1.8) and I'm hooked. It's not just the amazing economy but I love how it drives especially out in the country , the combination of electric + petrol powering out of a bend is quite addictive! However If you want to cruise at 90mph+ etc then it's not for you!

Corolla Touring Sport 2.0 Icon MY 25 spec.

Its been very difficult finding a suitable replacement for the excellent Superb PHEV but the wife found the new model impossible to get into because of the seat bolsters. The car did have a few issues for me as well, the quality has taken a dive inside (me thinks Skoda have been told to make their cars worse since they were upstaging Audi and VW) as has the standard kit. The consider the simple fact that being over £40,000 there is an extra £410 a year VED to pay for year 2 through to year 6 would quickly eat away at any savings. And then there is the stupid position VAG have decided to move the gear selector to, what is wrong with the console, putting it on the RH side of the column seems daft and alien to most of us.

Finding estates and large hatchbacks is getting more difficult by the year so we initially looked at the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson. Both nice cars well priced and kitted out but just like the Superb the wife could not get in.

Looked at VW Passat Estate and it was a definite step up on the Superb inside. Same stupid place for the gear selector as the Superb and the wife could not get in. Tried a Golf, still the wife could not get in (no proper hybrid or PHEV either).

But the surprise was the Touran, despite being way higher wife was OK since the seats were "better" designed. But could not bring myself to buy an SUV or spend over £40,000.

So off to look at Toyota. Went to see the dealer we bought the Yaris from armed with the CarWow price (like we did when we bought the Yaris). No demo cars and no interest in matching the price. Bad start. Called in at the local dealer who had been an obnoxious liar previously and the salesman repeated the old performance. Made a complaint to Toyota.

Then spotted a used 2 litre in Derby, not that far away so rang and checked and popped down. Not a car I wanted (GR with 40 profile tyres, sports suspension and seats etc) but at least it had the right engine. The car was 18 months old, 2 owner and 1900 miles, a bit suspicious. Sales manager gave me the keys and said you have an hour. Quite disappointed, the engine was very quick to rev at a slight press of the throttle, just like older CVT's. It made the car a bit noisy and unpleasant. never noticed the ride or seats, took it back after about 20 minutes.

With nothing else of interest it looked like we were keeping the Superb, nothing wrong with it but our 5 years change cycle is approaching.

Got an e-mail from the Sales Manager at the local Toyota dealer asking me to call him, seems the e-mail had been forwarded. After a few e-mails he agreed that much of what the salesman had told me was incorrect and suggested we went a drive in their brand new 2 litre Touring Sport Excel demo car. What a revelation, it was great. Very little rev flaring and even with the 40 profile tyres and sports seats the ride was quiet and comfortable. Did not expect him to come up with a deal and was not to be disappointed, not heard from him since. But it did make me wonder if the car I drove at Derby was an earlier CVT spec car or with the low miles a car that had been rejected.

So we did a deal for a 2 litre Touring Sport Icon for late May delivery via Carfile (as usual). The Icon has all the kit we want except rear tinted glass but a unit about 200 yards from home has quoted me £160 to do that and the insurers want no extra. Just need to sort a spare (a full size wheel/tyre will fit in the well under the boor floor with no loss of space). The Icon has 205/55 profile tyres thus cheaper and a better ride.

Hopefully it will be happy days.

Well done you.

We don't agree on everything but you have a knack of finding what is good for you.

Keep us updated please,

Must look at carfile.

Nice one.

Good choice re tyre size my Swace (TS in drag) had the same size (and probably the same wheels) and ride quality is fab. Handling not so shabby either and the turning circle is usefully small. I got a spacesaver spare from Thewheelshop - good price/service and full size available if needed however the storage space underneath the rear deck is useful.

I already had two flexible / foldable VW & Audi storage boxes - these fit perfectly inside between the wheel arches.

Highlights:-

  • No need to mention economy!
  • latest gen 5 Toyota hybrid gubbins impressive
  • Knobs and buttons - yay! Including for his/hers climate.
  • Android Auto/ Apple Carplay integrates really well
  • Important for me - height adjustable rear view mirror.
  • Headlights - wow
  • Modern safety gubbins not so in your face, even the lane control works well.

Slight niggles:-

  • Bit more road noise compared to my Superb hatch which had the same size tyres. Possibly partly due to the estate format but expecting it to improve when I first change the tyres to Crossclimates. Generally very refined though.
  • With the 43l fuel tank , in reality you only get a useable 32l! I suppose not an issue when you get 450-500 miles real life range on that - possibly a bit less with the 2.0 although a friend with a new gen 5 CHR 2.0 is getting great mpg. 2.0 has direct and port fuel injection.
  • Economy worse in the winter - usual with any battery centric car I suppose.

Enjoy...

Regarding the Swace, currently have a Vitara and looking for more bootspace in next car. What is the warranty situation with the Swace, battery health check etc, is there anything that compares with the Toyota schemes? Also can the driver aids be turned off ? Thx

The Swace has the usual Suzuki 3 year warranty service extendable up to 7 years / 100,000 miles. Toyota has service extendable to 10 years / 100,000 miles. At my current mileage rate I'll hit 100k miles circa 7 years anyway. For me the Swace was a no brainer a) I loved the test drive and I'm fussy and big! b) The flexible estate large boot configuration suited our requirements. c) I got one hell of a deal.

Adaptive cruise / lane control is controlled from the steering wheel and is off as default - direct button press, not sub menus etc. I've even configured it so I can enable a single button press to set adaptive to the prevailing speed limit.

However there are some standard protections that can be turned off - but I suspect some reset next time you start the car. To be honest they have been generally well behaved so I've left alone. Infact a couple of times some have saved my bacon 1) Someone decided to brake check me 2) I was alerted to a speed limit change(subtle single beep) where the signs were obscured, shortly followed by a speed van encounter.

I suspect the newer the car the more you'll encounter "gubbins" on any vehicle due to regulations of the day however this stuff really varies between manufacturers. I struggled when I test drove a Skoda Kamiq, it was doing horrible things as default trying to steer me towards and oncoming car on a back road. I also disliked the Mazda CX30 I had recently as a courtesy car , very in your face - endless bings, bongs and red flashing warnings especially driving normally on a street that had parked cars! It also kept on picking up speed limit signs no where near the road I was on - eg a distant 5mph when passing a factory stage left.

NB If you look for a 1.8 Swace or Corolla note that 2023 is critical year as power increased from 122ps to 140ps and started using the latest gen 5 hybrid gubbins. The earlier version can be identified by buttons surrounding the centre info screen.

Re Audi A4. It might have been discontinued but looking on Autotrader there are some pretty well discounted nearly new cars
