Ford Probe(!) - badbusdriver

KGF Classics seem to specialise in sourcing very low mileage cars, often quite obscure or forgotten, I get videos popping up regular on YouTube.

This one really go my attention though, I mean when was the last time you saw or even thought about the Ford Probe?. Unfortunate name which, along with the fact it wasn't a hairy chested rear wheel drive dinosaur like the car it effectively replaced, meant it wasn't that successful in terms of sales.

Not a bad looking car though (IMO) and surely worth the asking price, given the condition, mileage, how few survivors there must be left?.

It was based on a mazda and one of our Jaguar customers bought one for his wife !

The name caused a few chuckles though.

Yeah, Mazda MX6 platform and running gear.

Just under 170bhp (for the V6) wasn't too shabby for the time, but would be considered extremely modest these days!

They seem to specialise in selling low mileage unexceptional cars for a lot of money. However, the I am still getting to grips with the popularity of 80s Fords, so what do I know.

The Probe was a strange car. I think ultimately it suffered because the Vauxhall Calibra, Rover Coupe and Honda Prelude were all faster and better looking. I think the fact it didn't look like a (European) Ford didn't help either.

The V6 Mazda engine was a gem . The rest of the car was dire . Typical low rent US build quality. Traders used to buy these out the auctions thinking they’ve got aircon, unfortunately they all have the switch on the dash but ac not fitted . Also this one has the unreliable Bosch immobiliser system .

one of my cousins in the US had one. I remember the seatbelts that automatically ran in a track on the body.

Easter Monday 1994 - armed robbery at a local golf club where my 21 year old student son was a part-time barman. Just before 11 o'clock - 3 men, one had a gun & 2 with knives entered, he was threatened with gun. They tied up 3/4 customers and forced my son to open the safe - £6,000 in the safe as the banks had been shut since Thursday

What's the link to Ford Probe?

Eyes raised when one of the customers who had been tied up appeared a few days later in a brand new white Ford Probe. Police checked with the local garage - ordered a few weeks before and on HP!

Our financial director had one of these. I thought it looked cheap and gave off all sorts of mid-life-crisis vibes.

I seem to remember that at that time Ford offered four different V6 engines across its range.

The Probe 2.5l V6 from Mazda, the Duratech 2.5l V6 in the Mondeo, the Scorpio with the venerable 2.9l V6 and the Explorer 4x4 with an American 4.0l V6.

Ford Probe(!) - Random

There's one not far from me, been parked up for years.

Coincidentally I've saw another one parked up in a front garden in East Anglian bow and arrow country this afternonn along with a Polo Coupe pre-facelift and a Facelift MK1 Vauxhall Carlton.
