Toyota Prius - Dealer Car Purchase Knowledge Is Power - Dave1UK

So after a lot of consideration and what seemed a lot of research/thought/discussion I went for a high mileage 2014 Toyota Prius UK model (£0 road tax along with cheaper insurance than an import). This was purchased from a dealer for an added "security" peace of mind via credit card (consumer rights protection?) and their 3 month warranty on engine/mechanical and 6 months on the battery. Came with a reconditioned battery the day before (invoice to prove it).

I went about looking for a car trying to avoid a lot of pitfalls that you hear and learn in life. I'm very mechanically inclined however the hybrid territory was new and a bit frightening to begin with. Mechanically the car seems to be sound have no quibbles (for now).

Now, this dealer has very high and clean reviews 80+ on Autotrader as well as Google etc. I checked tens of tens of dealer reviews when looking at any car just to get an idea of their customer base and avoided those with more than a few 1 stars. I checked the cars MOT history, even done a vehicle check report as a few £ is cheaper than a mistake. Another bonus was that they were local in case of any issues arising I wouldn't have to travel miles.

I was able to knock them down a bit on price, as the cars external cosmetic condition wasn't as desirable, scratches, boot wouldn't close properly unless you give it a stronger slam, the wing needed to be repaired and a foggy headlight. The knock down would of accounted for these defects. Along with them advertising it with part service history but when I asked to see the service history there was none.

I am awaiting the V5C in the post but was given the green slip. I thought I'd have a look at the cars VIN numbers as wanted the owners manual from the Toyota website as didn't come with one included. So I go and check the VIN on the doors, the drivers door VIN was different than the other doors so it would have to have been replaced, assuming due to an accident.

The car wasn't registered as having any damage on the vehicle check report nor mentioned by the dealer, now I don't mind a scratch/bump here and there but replacing a whole drivers door just makes me wonder what other damage there could have been?

It goes to show that whatever precautions you take, there is always more to learn and to be vigilant about.

I hate to rain upon your hopes, but the Vin numbers are as the link from Toyota

If the vin number on the door frame is different go straight back to the dealer and reject the car and immediately notify DVLA and trading standards and possibly the Police..

Evidence of a cut and shut.

It involves taking two or more damaged cars and cutting and welding them together to create a single functioning vehicle. These modifications are often done without proper engineering expertise or safety considerations, resulting in a car that is structurally compromised and potentially hazardous on the roads.

The VIN numbers are on the doors itself (like the picture on the website you sent) not the door frame. The driver side door VIN is different (has been replaced). I couldn't locate one on the windscreen as that's where I looked first.

I would of assumed door replacements are allowable? Or are they not? If anyone else can confirm this as don't want to be going back there and then end up looking like an i****/a person who is just trying to cause a fuss due to buyers regret/remorse although if it truly is illegal that's a different matter.

Thanks.

At 10 years old, it’s unlikely any dealer is going to inspect a vehicle to see if it’s still got the original body panels . It may have had a new door a week after original delivery. Can’t see anything illegal here . If you want something that’s perfect , then you need to buy new .

f you are close to a Toyota dealer go and ask them at reception or just get some one who knows about these things to look. A lack of vin number at the bottom of the windscreen would also be a red flag.

Does anyone know whether this very 20th-century habit still goes on ? I haven't heard of it for years - of course that means little - but I'd have thought car construction was a lot more complex than (say) a 1970s Mini to make up from two halves, what with airbags and all the other stuff ? And as for a pair of EVs ....

I would have thought that if it was a door swap with a different vin number on the door then ok but i understood that the vin labels are stuck on the A or B pillars and elsewhere also on some other models. BUT seriously check the vin under the carpet in the front and have a look at the lower edge of the windscreen.

Your money!

Perhaps just a complete side frame ie front and rear door frames NOT the door(s)

I have seen that done but a while ago.

The VIN should be at the bottom of the windscreen, on the door frame and under the driver's seat. Ignore the stickers on the doors.
