Supervising a learner - Antony

My sister is learning to drive - she's passed her theory test and is having lessons with an instructor. She is thinking of buying a car now to get more experience behind the wheel before she takes her driving test, and has asked if I would supervise her. I have never done this before, but found some very useful stuff at:

www.gov.uk/guidance/supervise-a-learner-driver

The site states: "As a full licence holder, you’re in charge of the car, even when the learner is driving." If my sister was to be involved in an accident, would I be responsible as the full licence holder? I assume I would need to be named on her insurance policy as a named driver when I am supervising her, but would I need to inform my own insurer if she had an accident while driving under my supervision? Unless I missed it, I didn't see this covered on the site above.

What it means is anything which applies to a driver also applies to a driver whilst instructing.

So no drink or drugs, you can be tested if the car is stopped, no using your mobile phone while instructing, you can get the points and penalty.

If the driver is dangerous, speeding etc it is down to you to intervene.

No motorways (be aware that not all motorways look like motorways, so know where yours are). A friend was pulled for taking a learner on the Leeds Inner Ring Road, its only a 40 limit, but its actually the A58(M) and is a motorway in order to exclude certain vehicles.

You do not need any insurance in your name, you do not need to inform your insurer should there be an accident while she is driving.

As advised get at least one extra mirror for the passenger side so you can see what is behind and alongside at all times.

Learner insurance is generally much cheaper than newly qualified driver insurance so check prices before choosing a car.

The learner driver has the same duty of care to other road users as an experienced driver - you share the liability with the learner.

Legally you don't have to have insurance to drive her car, but it would be handy if she has a meltdown and you need to drive her back home.

As an introduction to supervising a learner ,ask her instructor if you can do one of her lessons seated in the back, sit behind her, so she cannot see you in her mirror or how you are reacting to her driving, you will also be able to pick up on the level of professional instruction she needs at her level of ability.

Buy this book it will help you a lot.
