Peugeot 3008 - Mechanic/Garage have botched a job, damaged engine - Nathan Higham

So... I recently bought a used car. It has the 1.5 BlueHDI engine, Been made aware of an issue with the 7mm cam chain snapping and it being uprated to and 8mm chain with new cams/housing etc and kits to have it done.

Approached a local garage of reasonable size/good reviews to do the work. Discussed the job with them they seemed fully aware of the manufacturing issue/kit needed. They then insisted it could just have the chain swapped, I highlighted that from what id researched this seemed to not be the case and the full kit is needed. They had the car for a day, rang me and confirmed they were incorrect and needed the full kit, Ordered it, I paid the difference (as I originally expected too) and they said they were going to fit it. 3 days of "delays" later and the boss of the place calls me. Admits they'd tired to just put the 8mm chain on without the new cams, sprockets, housing etc. The chains jumped and damaged the engine...

They've admitted its their fault and they'll rectify it. Im far from clued in with car repairs. He said hes going to send the head off to be skimmed, Replace bent valves, and didn't mention much else (unsure if that means he isn't doing anything else or just didn't go into everything they'd do).

I dont really have much trust in the garage at this point. Nor do i know what it'd require to put 100% right/potential damage other than bent valves/What to expect. Or if its even possible to completely repair the engine? I honestly dont know what to do and need some advice.. The car I got was a big investment for me, Ive had it 2 weeks, Tried to get some preventative maintenance done from a seemingly long standing and reputable shop and now all this...

Im seeing mixed things on whether or not its possbile to actually put the engine back right 100%, So I honestly just don't know what to do, what to check, what my rights are...

Firstly, this is a very common issue con these engines that are fitted to many different vehicles, including Ford , Citroen etc . It’s certainly repairable and should be 100% fix . Plenty of garages out there repair these where the chain has snapped and wrecked the top of the engine.

It will be covered by them luckily. The 7mm chain didnt snap, they incorrectly installed an 8mm chain without the rest of the upgrade kit and caused the damage due to negligence

Is them buying the car from you an option?
