Nissan Leaf - First impressions of 2.5k Leaf - johnnyrev

I’ve now had my Leaf for a couple of weeks so I thought I’d give a few first impressions. First is the price, I still can’t quite believe Leafs (Leaves?) of this age (2015 on a 64 plate) are so cheap. It’s in really good overall condition, with just one tiny pin prick sized dent, and polishes up quite nicely (it’s black so it shows all the dirt).

It went off to the local Nissan main dealer yesterday for a main service (£230) and came back with a clean bill of health. Part of me was a bit anxious that they’d find a major fault, but no, all is fine. I struggled to find an independent garage to service it, so I’d welcome any suggestions (we’re in Birmingham). But the Nissan dealer was very good, efficient, interested and helpful.

The battery health is showing 11 out of 12, and the check that the dealer did showed good health as well. I’ve read on forums that you can scan the battery health using the OBD port for a variety of information, but I’m not sure what that would achieve and what I’d do with that information. The dash shows the 11 out of 12 bars, which is very helpful when browsing Autotrader!

I’ve spent a bit of cash as well on new mats, new wheel trims (no alloys on the Visia model) and a new boot seal, as there was a bit of dampness in the boot. The old boot seal looked as if it had been damaged by removing the charging cable many times over. That was a ten minute job, and hopefully an easy fix.

As mentioned, it’s the base model, so no screen, and a basic radio/CD player, but that’s fine with me. It’s still got air con and you can set the charging to start at a set time, and the car interior to pre-heat. It’s got keyless entry and start, and cloth seats (I don’t like leather seats!).

At the moment I’m getting around 85 miles on a charge (it’s the 24kw battery), which is fine for work and we have 3 other cars in the household. I’m only using a normal plug socket and leaving it overnight. I did some maths and worked out the electricity is around half the cost of petrol (someone can correct me if that’s not right!). According to the trip computer I’m getting 4.5 miles per kWh.

And it’s lovely to drive. Smooth, quiet, a good turn of speed when needed, and the handling isn’t too soft and wobbly after driving my Mini. The seats are really comfortable. Ironically, I’d quite happily do a long journey in it!

Superb! So sounds ideal for your needs and what a price! I know some will question the £230 'service' but it must give you peace of mind knowing all is well?

Must admit I'm tempted to try and find one myself to use as a shopping trolley..

Makes a huge amount of sense as a second or additional runaround for commuting, shopping etc. where the range isn't an issue.

Yes, I decided it was worth having the service just to make sure all was okay. It’s got a full service history from a main dealer, so it’s been looked after.

Driving an EV? One of us one of us.....

Anyway 4.5m per kwh is pretty decent efficiency. You're getting that in winter, you'll probably do even better in the summer. Presumably you're home charging? Get the best vfm. You'll need a specialist EV tarriff. I get five hours a night at 9p per kw that's 2.5p per mile motoring. If like me you can do all your motoring within your vehicles range it's really cheap motoring.

A happy bonus is during that 5hr window all the house is also on the cheap rate. So washing machine / dishwasher get run overnight! Such a tarriff is easily obtained if you have a smart meter. 95pct of EV owners never use public chargers. With a Leaf I believe you can't access CC2 which is pretty much the European standard connector. But it sounds like the Leaf works for you.

The only downside to that is when the machine fails with catastrophic results. In that case it is better for it to happen when the occupants are awake.

True but four years in, all good so far.

we use to leave our washing machine and dishwasher on overnight until talking to a guy I know who worked in the fire service told me about a couple of dishwasher fires he had attended to that had been used over night..

4.5m/kwh is very very good for this time of year and I am surprised you are getting that much. Running the heater and with a cold battery you'd normally expect sub-4m/kw.

11 bars indicates it has between 80 and 85% battery capacity so somewhere around 18kWh at a max charge. That would imply the indicated range of 80 miles although you'd be quite brave to actually take it to 80.

As you say there is really nothing to service on these apart from cabin filters and a check over so although I guess one service makes sense for peace of mind not sure I'd bother with many more on a £2.5k car.

They're good value and if you get a proper overnight tariff cost buttons to run and should have a lot of life left.

Turning the heat on immediately knocks 10 miles off the range, so unless the windows need de-misting, I just don’t turn the heat on!

Can’t beat em as a second motor. Peanuts to run, plus they're comfy and reliable. I’m still considering buying a cheap 24kwh Mk I as a third car. The sums more than stack up as it would save around £2k a year on fuel alone and it would keep the miles off the Merc. Few crusty looking examples around here though, but I much regret not jumping on a very nice red one that was up privately nearby recently.

Sounds good, cheap way of getting local journeys very cheaply.
