Citroen C4 Picasso - Timing belt and semi auto gearbox service - Theresa Farrugia

Hi, thinking of buying a c4 Picasso 1.6e HDI Airdream VTR 2014 Plate. Does anyone know how often or at how many miles the time belt and pump need to be repaired. Also it is an semi automatic gearbox how often or how many miles does that need servicing. Thank you

This will have the Dv6 engine fitted to loads of Peugeot, Citroen Ford and Volvo models. Cam belt service is 10 years or 100 k miles , so it should have been done . You’ll need to check . The gearbox is really an electronic robotic manual, so no real service required other than checking oil level .

Have you driven the car you are looking at or another car with that type of gearbox?. If not, I'd suggest you have a decent test drive in a variety of situations.

We used to have a car with the same type, and and it wasn't great. Slow responses, slow gear changes, juddering when cold, borderline hazardous in multi storey car parks (changing from 2nd to 1st at the top of a ramp would actually have the car rolling back before 1st kicked in lurching you forward!)

Also worth pointing out that the engine used in these doesn't have a great reputation for reliability.

I’ll second the recommendation to take a good test drive. This is a horrible gearbox, gear changes are slow and often jerky, it doesn’t like being driven hard so you’ll need to be gentle on the go go pedal. The engine in these is known for turbo failure, injector problems, clogged DPF’s etc etc etc. I wouldn’t recommend a more than decade old DPF equipped diesel to anyone, it’ll almost certainly be a complete money pit. Do you absolutely need an automatic MPV? I’d strongly suggest you look at something else instead. I wouldn’t touch the wet belt Puretec 1.2 petrol turbo or the chain driven 1.6 VTi in some Citroens of this vintage either. It’s a real low point for PSA.

A Toyota Verso with a petrol engine would be a far safer bet, ditto a Honda HRV or CRV. But much depends on budget and your requirements.

I've owned and driven the 63 Reg Picasso with 1.6eHDI with manual gearbox. I actually enjoyed driving the car. I filled Shell V Power Diesel for entire duration of my ownership(crazy) but never had any engine related issue. I had owned up to 115,000 miles. Replaced both front shock absorber, clutch around 80,000. I didn't change the timing belt as I was about to get rid of it before BIG issue arise. I think Eolys fluid needed to top up when I sold.....
