Mercedes-Benz E-Class / AMG - Servicing costs for a high-end Q-car - craig-pd130

Interesting video here from the owner of a 2011 AMG E63 with the M156 n/a V8 motor. He's the proprietor of an independent MB specialist in Stockport, and has done a couple of videos breaking down the ownership & servicing costs of this 480bhp Q-car.

Small spoiler: over the past calendar year, servicing & upkeep maintenance costs (including workshop time at the rate he'd charge to a customer and VAT, for the sake of clarity) worked out at £1 per mile. And this is for a well-cared for example too!

This did include a couple of items which fell into the category of 'preventative / worth doing while you're in there' jobs but even so. It just proves the old adage (which the owner himself agrees with) that 'there's no such thing as a cheap used Mercedes ... '

A good specialist certainly can save you money, and service items are actually quite reasonable. But if anything actually breaks it’s gonna empty your wallet if you own a big Merc. Even my piddly 2.0 4cyl turbo is likely to bite me at some point. Servicing so far has really been no dearer than a mainstream car at a dealer.

Thanks - v. interesting. Main learning point - AMG = AllMoneyGone! The n/a M156, which was only produced for a few years and was plagued by problems.....

....was presumaby intended to outperform VW's good old n/a 444bhp W12, which has very few problems despite being a considerably older design.

Certainly the AMG motor essentially being a hand-built, limited-run special design doesn't help. I do tend to think that a well-thought-out design that's mass-produced on good tooling is perhaps likely to be more reliable than a motor comprising lots of special bits (and component replacement costs will be cheaper too).

The example of the corroded / cracked throttle body mounting plate was very surprising. Poor material selection and design..

My W211 e320 D which has covered 170 k is maintained by my local indie but when I bought it a year ago I took it to our local MB specialist with 50 years of experience to sort out some problems. Whilst replacing the alternator which is a difficult job, being situated deep between the V6 they noticed a faulty turbo gasket and failed heater plugs . They also have access to the STAR software but essentially it’s their knowledge with dealing with just one marque that counts. German car specialists have to deal with VAG too so they don’t see quite as many MBs .

I'm also surprised the M156 had the very basic design of cam lobes directly contacting the valve lifter bucket (which are known to seize in the M156 - they are supposed to turn a bit each time) rather than using roller-rockers which seem to be a better design - as long as they are made sturdy enough (Audi had many problems with them).

I've had 6 used Mercedes...one stolen...and found the main dealers prices horrendous. I have used a local indie who keeps the servicing costs quite reasonable. Mercedes customer care is next to useless when you need help.
