Toyota Yaris - bigger car on a budget! - Beaglelady

I have a 2011 Toyota Yaris that has only done 30,000 miles, I love her she is reliable and great!

I have one dog-medium to large breed and an almost 3 year old who is very tall and the height of a 5 year old! husband is 6'5!

the Yaris is not our main family car my husband has a Volvo V60 but tbh it is not as big as he thought!

I am looking to get a bigger car for myself, would like something very reliable, automatic preferred, perhaps a small SUV or 4x4,would prefer a petrol

budget is around £8,000

unsure whether to keep going my Yaris or get something bigger as the cabin space is tight and although the boot is generous I could do with more! Nice things like a car alarm! and heated seats/windscreen would also be a treat!

Maybe a Honda CRV or Suzuki S Cross

Where roughly will you be looking? I’ll take a look at what’s available nearby. A Mk IV petrol Honda CRV 2wd would be a good bet, but it all depends on what’s available at the time.

OP, your user name and the post in general is very familiar.

Either you have posted before asking the same thing or there is a glitch in the matrix!

Yeah, I did do a search for the username and found quite the back catalogue!

Yaris seems to have been bought some time after 26th Sept '22, with the first of five (including this one) threads looking for its replacement coming in July '23. Budget started at £11-12k, then £12k, then £10k, then £10k again and now down to £8k

If the OP is actually planning to change this time, while not impossible, it is going to be tricky finding something. Though with only 1-2k miles per year being covered (according to the most recent post prior to this one in Feb '24), mpg needn't be a factor!

I’m on the other side in Ayr. What is the budget though? It seems to have changed a lot since you first raised this question two and a half years ago. I think I know the issue here though, I ran an old Toyota for years despite considering and looking for a replacement several times. It was just so dependable that I only acted when it was just getting too old to be trusted to carry two young children on holidays etc. I pass said car regularly with its new owner in Johnstone and it still looks in great condition.

Wondering whether a KIA Venga / Hyundai ix20 1.6 petrol auto [6 speed version from 2015/16] in the mid-upper middle spec but shod on sensible 205/55 R16 tyres might be worth a look?

Not the most economical car, though an improvement on the previous 4speed auto box version, and it makes good use of the car's footprint for interior/boot space, though the latter (400L or so) is high rather than long, so not sure if it would be good for a large dog to be in.

Quite well kitted out too, at least that's I thought with the Venga in '3' trim level. I see a good few now being PXed at my local KIA main dealer, one sold so quick it didn't even make it properly (appear saying 'being prepared' then sold after less than 5 days) onto their website.

I suppose with KIA / Hyundai's previous models' history with not-so-good underbody rust protection, early examples (perhaps before 2015) might be an issue in Scotland (or potential owners living / working near the seaside) due to the higher amount of road salting in winter than down South, but I'll leave that to you SLO to comment on as you have better insider information from your previous career than I.
