Vito W638 - Changed fuel filter and now engine doesn't start - ProblematicMan

Hi, I am absolutely new to the mechanic world, but have been reading and learning a lot.

Yesterday I changed the fuel filter of my Vito W638, and it didn't start anymore. I also disassembled the EGR to see how dirty it was, to discover it had a "plug" to make it not to work.

I don't know if while changing the fuel filter some air entered in the system, or what happened, but I put again the old fuel filter, which worked. Still the engine don't start.

I recorded a video to show you exactly what happens when igniting.

I need your help! Surely it is a very easy thing to do when you know it, but I don't know.

Thanks

Have you primed the filter?

Hi, I am absolutely new to the mechanic world, but have been reading and learning a lot.

Glad to hear it's sorted. But one of the most important lessons to learn about machinery is - if it works, don't mend it. These days, in line fuel filters hardly ever need changing. Gone are the days of rusty metal petrol tanks and dodgy rural petrol stations. As well as the in line filter, modern cars have a filter in the actual fuel tank pump uptake (at least, the Mk 1 Focus we had did). When the pump failed at over 120,000 miles I changed the in line filter as a precaution, thinking it might have become partially blocked, thus stressing the pump. But on examination, there was hardly any sign of blockage which would have significantly interfered with the fuel flow and it would probably have lasted the life of the car. The one in its predecessor, a 240,000 mile Passat, did.

Service schedules indicate otherwise. My last diesel specified a diesel filter change every B service.
