DS 9 - PSA 1.6 Purtec wet belt - JonestHon

Looking a the maintenance/replacement process of the wet belt timing design in Purtec 1.2 engines from PSA/Stellantis.

Seems like it is a very involved procedure, plus a fairly long head seal curing time, meaning this task can't usually completed in one day. Is the same complexity applied with the bigger displacement 1.6 Purtec?

The puretech engine is a 3 cylinder wet belt design either turbo or non turbo with a 1.2 litre capacity. Replacement belt does not require any cylinder head removal. Only cam cover and sump .

Car Mechanics magazine covered the wet belt replacement in a non turbo 208 in the September 2024 issue. The job wasn't beyond the capabilities of a competent DIYer.

I read that article in Tesco's. IIRC job seemed like a truly regal PITA.

Stood and watched my mate do one last week, took him a hour and half, 'book' time is 4 hours, he's done a couple now so doesn't muck about.

Biggest pita is taking the wheel arche liner out and you do need a set of tools to lock the timing etc .

Forgot to add, that didn't include dropping the sump, he'd done that previously.

I tend to agree after watching youtu.be/QoTP8fbJ5ak?si=Ju91iTgsnoDcrwA8

Still, I am not clear if the Purtec 1.6 has to via the same procedure as the 1.2, people here talk about turbo and non turbo, is that mean the 1.6 is a non turbo? Please clarify.

The 1.6 is a turbo engine, I would imagine a belt change involves much the same as the 1.2.

I don't know about the 1.6, but the 1.2 is available in turbo and non turbo variants. The turbo adds a bit of extra work.

The bigger 1.6 is a completely different engine and is chain driven according to what I’ve read. I believe it’s based on the Prince VTi motor shared with Mini, but hopefully they’ve sorted the timing chain issues by now. In theory a timing chain should last the life of the car if it’s regularly serviced but these are known to be weak on older versions. I’d call your nearest Citroen dealer to verify, it’s quite a rare car.
