VW Golf Estate TDi 2007 - Please help me find the correct suspension parts - LeeLee83

Hi all, my car is a VW Golf Estate TDi 2007 - Reg CX57 XRL.

Can you help me find out which suspension parts I need to buy to amend the advisories?

I've got someone coming to fit them when I have them. I don't know them so well so don't want to hound them with messages asking them what to buy.

Here's the list:

  • Offside Front Lower Suspension component ball joint dust cover severely deteriorated (5.3.4 (b) (i))
  • Nearside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Rear wishbone bush. (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Offside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Rear wishbone bush. (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Rear Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Trailing arm. (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Offside Rear Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Trailing arm. (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Rear Inner Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Control arm. (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Offside Rear Inner Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Control arm. (5.3.4 (a) (i))

All help appreciated!

I tend to buy things on eBay, and if it's allowed, please post links if you have the time.

Thank you.

Just go to your local Eurocarparts

Give them your registration and pay a bit more than you would pay on ebay, for parts that will definitely be fit to use, and if a problem return and swap.

There are lots of duff pats on ebay (and others)

www.eurocarparts.com/suspension-arm-and-suspension...s

examples.

Hi -
The last time I was buying some of these it was for a Honda CRV a couple of month back.

Europarts wanted £220 per suspension arm.

eBay had a pair for £90 with free delivery.

There are often online coupons and verified sellers.

I'm not sure you need do anything much. All those advisories except the first one basically say 'that part is worn but it's still doing its job'. Have another look at the next MoT. Things which are 'severely deteriorated' should be dealt with.

The first one then, what do I buy?

I've looked for suspension dust covers, but if I'm honest, I have no idea. Will a mechanic need to look for the specific part?

If you supply the parts and they subsequently fail, you'll have no comeback against whoever fitted them.

If you let the mechanic supply and fit the parts, then they'll be responsible.

It's a mechanic doing it outside of work. "On the side" type of thing.

He won't supply them.

No, he will probably get them from his regular factor, probably/possibly with trade discount, and should know more about getting the correct ones ? If you have access to a 'private' mechanic, trust him to do his job without worrying about saving the odd quid.

Unless he says you should get the parts - which I would find strange.

That he is doing it on the side doesn't explain why he won't get the parts himself as he could easily get them through his day job. Of course that assumes his day job is as a mechanic, but even if it isn't, the fact that he is working as a mechanic in his spare time means he must be able to get parts himself. I could understand if it was something rare, very old, or obscure, where it may not be that easy through conventional sources, but not for a Golf.

Do you really have no other options in your area? (where is that?)

Have you actually noticed anything wrong with the way the car drives? Does it knock over bumps and/or feel vague to drive?

If it doesn't, and you are ok with how it drives, are you sure it all needs doing. You could probably take it for another MOT in a years time and some of these things will have probably magically fixed themselves!

The first one, the dust cover, is in the "Repair as soon as possible (minor defects)" category.

So, I want that done.

The car does have a bit of a noise when I drive & turn slowly.

I'm just trying to proactively look after the car without spending a fortune on it. If I get a few things done now, it might last a year or two longer.

I live North Northumberland, not far from Scotland.

There's a couple of garages, but they're bookings are booked well ahead.

Anyway, said mechanic has said if I get the parts, he'll come and fit them. I just want to know what parts to get - particularly the first advisory, which was a 'fix as soon as possible one.'

I've no idea which cover type thing to buy.

What you need to ask for is a lower front ball joint, doubt you'll get the rubber dust cover on its own, if the ball joint comes separately and not part of the lower arm shouldn't think they'll be handed.

Go to your local motor factor and show them your mot advisories, they should be able to help, it's only the first item that needs immediate attention.

Keep us posted.....

Same as before, if you supply the parts and they fail or they’re wrong then you’re liable for the hassle of returning them and the cost of fitting then removing them, while if your mechanic (or better yet a good local garage) supplies them then they’re liable.

I’d look for a good local independent instead as you don’t have the knowledge to supply the right parts yourself. For all you’ll save it’s not worth it.

The other day I copied and pasted the dust cover bit into Google prefaced with 2007 VW Golf. Didn't get any results specific for the car, but there are a few available described as universal. Did it again just now and found a comment from a VW T4 forum, and while I realise that isn't what your car is, I'd imagine the same applies. The OP in the thread asked basically the same question re the dust cover and another forum member came back with this:

I'd just replace the ball joint - they're not that expensive and since you've got to split the taper anyway to fit a new cover you may as well IMO.

You can also check the condition of the inner driveshaft splines and regrease while you're about it, as it's a common fault at around that mileage and you'll have done most of the work to get at it.

After reading that, I did have a look at the price of the ball joint itself (which comes with a dust cover), and the one listed on Autodoc ('03-'09 Golf, but didn't put in the reg number) is under £20.

Brilliant!

Thank you. I'll buy that.

Wish I hadn't mentioned about the mechanic & supplying my own parts!

It turned into a discussion about that rather than advising me what part to get, until you came along!

If you are interested in learning more, you could get a Haynes manual for the Golf (up to model year 2008, say) either new (perhaps) or certainly second-hand on E-bay.
