A local mobile mechanic has said ... it’s cheaper if I buy the parts as he adds money on when he gets them. Without wanting to appear totally clueless, what exactly do I need to buy? How much oil? Which filters? Do I need glow plugs?
First, if the car starts and runs correctly you don't need glow plugs, at least as part of a regular service. If starting gets difficult in cold weather, maybe ask that question again.
Other regular service items aren't very expensive. Your service man may add money if he buys them, but if you buy them you may be adding cost while doing so. Plus - if he is any good he may be less likely to get wrong parts, especially oil, as Elekie has said.
