I've just taken my rocker cover off to inspect my hydraulic lifters, are they supposed to be hard or soft if you push down on them whilst fitted in the engine?

As they are hydraulic, you won’t be able to press them down with your fingers .

Thanks for your reply.

I've pushed each one down with a screwdriver, after turning over the camshaft by hand.

I've found some on the input side soft ie able to push the lifter down and the rest firm, not able to move the lifter at all. I'm guessing the soft ones are faulty then!

That’s not really an adequate test . It depends how much oil is being retained in the lifter . You need to take them out to test them properly. What’s wrong with the car ?

Replaced one injector with a new one but car didn't run right. Ended up replacing the other 3. All coded in. Injector deviations not great at first but getting better while driving the car. Main problem now is car making quite a load ticking noise, especially on acceration and when warm. Have changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, added fuel additive. Nothing has made any difference to the ticking.

I'm an enthusiatic diy'er and have been pulling my hair out for weeks, over this noise

New, around £360

That sounds fine . Did you re cut the seats and fit new washers? Is that a set or each for £360 ?

sorry ,was that a set for £360 or each?

Each

No problem starting car, starts first time. no smoke from exhaust.

Looks like you've done it correctly . any wear on the cam lobes? these don't usually suffer with lifter problems.

VW Golf 1.6tdi - Hydraulic lifters - Dustyb

That's why I've started looking else where. No marks on the lobes, car's done 55k miles.

Getting mixed messages, from reading online about lifters. Some say they should be hard and no play and others say different. It's a minefield.

7 on the input side are easy to push, 1 is hard. All 8 on the exhaust side are hard. Two days ago I've never seen a lifter before(ha ha). Looks quite a big job to get them out so was hoping there was a test to confirm if they were faulty first

Massive job to get them out ,but its really the only way to test them . Is it a cayc engine code?

VW Golf 1.6tdi - Hydraulic lifters - Dustyb

How did you guess?

If you go to all the trouble of getting them out, is it worth testing them or just replacing them with a new set?

Also do you need to replace the "rocker arms" as well?
