New car advice - Jamie Common

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out on here.

I'm currently looking to buy a new car, my budget is £6500. I'm looking for something a little sporty as I currently drive a Citroen C1.

My criteria is:

Sporty hatchback but would consider other sizes of it was decent

Petrol or diesel

Decent mileage

Good sized boot to fit a push chair the trimmings

5 door.

Ive been looking at the Skoda Monte Carlo, Ford Focus, VW Golf or polo, Honda Civics. I just find it very overwhelming for what to go for.

Thanks,

Jamie

Tricky at that budget because with VW and Skoda (and Audi and Seat) you are in amongst early (and problematic) chain drive TSI engines. With Ford you will be in amongst the 1.0 Ecoboost engine, also problematic!.

The news is better with Honda where with the exception of early 9th gen (2011/2012) Civics having an appetite for oil, its all good news. They are otherwise very reliable, very spacious and with a very large boot. A look on Autotrader shows 2013 and 2014 cars with under 70k are within budget.

Equally reliable (as a petrol) is the Mazda 3. Not as spacious either in the cabin or boot as the Civic, but all good news otherwise, 2015 examples of the 3rd gen car available within budget.

BTW, i take it by Skoda Monte Carlo you mean Skoda Fabia (Monte Carlo is just a sporty trim level)?

At this money forget diesels or early chain driven VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda TSi petrols, Peugeot/Citroen 1.2 Puretec and any Ford fitted with the 1.0 Ecoboost. You won’t get a good hot hatch for the money so it’s more mundane stuff you should stick with. Best bet is something Japanese with a petrol motor such as the Honda Civic, Mazda 2/3 or a Toyota Yaris/Auris. The Ford Fiesta fitted with the tough Yamaha designed 1.25 petrol and the Focus with the larger 1.6 version of the same motor are good news and fun to drive. Where roughly will you be looking? Is that budget a strict £6500? In today’s market that won’t go far.

Agreed especially re the 8valve 1.2tsi EA111. Also beware the Honda 1.0 cam belt in oil engine which appears in later Civics etc.

The later VAG EA211 has stood the test of time in 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 &1,5 tsi (turbo) guises in many cars and does just about appear in the budget mentioned and are all surprisingly lively and very economical. The normally aspirated 1.0 mpi versions in some base models is lethargic though.

To identify the old previous EA111 cam chain engine standing in front of the car with the bonnet up look to see if the oil filter is at the top left of the engine above the alternator, turbo is at the front between engine & radiator.

To identify the new better cam belt EA211 the oil filter is at sump level and the turbo is between the engine and the bulkhead. PS Orientation is different on 1.4 Audi A4.

One small car I also quite like is also the Seat Ibiza Toca 1.4 model fitted with an older design cam belt normally aspirated engine but in this car it's pretty lively and seems to be available within the budget.

Oldest son bought a 2011 1.8 manual Civic s/h with 50k miles some 7 years ago.

He drives like a loon, but gets it serviced regularly. 100% reliable. Takes pushchair and LOTS of toys for 2 year old..

It would be helpful if the OP could expand on the “sporty” point. My assumption meantime is that he’s probably looking for something with a bit of poke, say under 10 secs to 60? Handling and torque also need to be right.

The Civic 1.8 is a good call. As it’s non turbo you need to give it revs to press on but I used to like the accompanying roar on the odd occasions I floored it. Mine did succumb to the aforementioned oil thirst of 2012 cars but otherwise it was a great car. The boot is large and magic seats are useful to carry family paraphernalia.

I also ran a Mazda 3 1.6 and it handled sportingly enough and was a fine cruiser. However, load it up and try to climb a hill and it’s anything but sporty. Mine was a 2012 and was rusting when it was sold last year.

Finally a Suzuki Swift 1.6 Sport might suit if not too small for a family. I think they did a 5 door but they will be rare. The only one I’ve been in was a bit Spartan so it might not suit a family but they drive very well.

My money would be on the Civic.

Yeah, "sporty" is bit vague, could just mean looks. "Skoda Monte Carlo" was mentioned by the OP, but as I said earlier, Monte Carlo (in that context) is simply a trim level which looks Sporty. For example, you can get a Skoda Citigo Monte Carlo, with the 60bhp 1.0!

Re the Mazda, the OP's budget is enough to get into a 3rd gen car with the 120bhp 2.0 which is still no ball of fire, but offers reasonable enough performance. There is also the option of the 3rd gen car with the 150bhp 2.0.

OP seems to have disappeared though

Yes, good point re 3rd Gen Mazda 3. They look good too.
