Those are amazing prices ORB.

You must live in a favoured area or be much younger than me. Mine cost 1200 for two cars valued together at less than £5000 and full NCD but I’m approaching 80

Checking out the details of being able to drive another car not owned by me I was surprised by the definition ORB.

Firstly its only to be used for “ Emergencies “ and secondly in the case of my insurer with the permission or notification of the third parties insurance company.

So maybe it’s a case of “ All that glitters “ etc.

But after learning about this I decided not to risk it.

Have you checked the terms of your cover ? Mine is with LV .

Checking out the details of being able to drive another car not owned by me I was surprised by the definition.

With LV both covered on both cars.. 1 in YRG's name one in mine. Registered one as hers so she can accrue some NCD, (I'm not getting any younger.

Anyways covered to drive other cars with LV, who finally came down on price to £504.

Allianz essential who own LV were cheaper or the Korando and RAC cheaper for the Venga, but both did not cover driving other vehicles.

Interestingly I could have got both for me with the two separate policies Allianz and RAC even cheaper.

Admiral multicar were just plain silly quotes.

Insurance is a minefield, Glad the brain is still functioning to wade through all the mess.

That’s what I thought ORB until I phone LV and asked them to define the cover .

The certificate gives the impression that you are covered to drive any car not owned by you third party only.

But hearing what LV do believe the cover to be was an eye opener and consequently I decided not to risk it.

They warned that trying to explain the cover to the police when you get stopped could be difficult especially if you have not contacted the third party insurer first

Mine states "With the insured persons permission" on my old documents will check when i receive new docs...

Thanks ORB especially the definition of Emergency.

Surprise result with the Fiat500e. Renewal 368 but using a site got it at 255 from Tesco but I preferred Aviva at 288. That's a superb price. Protected NCB , legal exp and PA, courtesy car etc.

So it's goodbye to the friendly doggy.

How odd.

Received new docs and says "Emergency Use"

Not that we ever used it.

Car insurance renewal - Still No Fidelity to customers - catsdad

I checked my LV docs when driving other cars came up a while back and they it’s for emergencies. I thought it was new but I checked last year’s docs too and it’s the same there. I haven’t dug back any further so no idea when it changed.

Contractually it’s odd though as (unless I missed it) I don’t see a definition of what an emergency is, or give examples. Maybe it’s buried somewhere it the paperwork. I haven’t used that part of the cover for years.

Had a pleasant surprise yesterday.

Earlier in the year I had started thinking about changing my trusty petrol Avensis TS & as there really aren't that many suitable options left for my needs had honed in on Corolla TS hybrid. Part of the research over the summer showed up that:

a) my, at that time long term insurer esure, looked unlikely to offer cover. As a result, come renewal in September I shifted insurer to Aviva

b) it looked likely that all my fuel savings from going hybrid (estimated £250pa) were going to be eaten by increased insurance premium :O

Yesterday, I went to pick up my "new to me", 10 month old with 10K, Corolla TS & obviously had to do the insurance changeover dance. The surprise came when at the end the premium uplift for the remaining 10 months of the policy was under £2! :D:D:D

p.s. I am covered for:

1. any vehicle loaned to the principal policyholder for a maximum of seven days from a garage, motor engineer or vehicle

repairer while the vehicle registration described above is being either serviced, repaired or having an MOT test.

2. any vehicle loaned to the principal policyholder or, any other person entitled to drive as described in permitted drivers, by

the insurer’s nominated supplier as a result of a claim under this policy:

i) whilst the vehicle registration described above is being repaired

ii) whilst the vehicle registration described above is being replaced

iii) following theft of the vehicle registration described above

& may, subject to the owner's express consent, also drive a motor vehicle which: does not belong to them; is not a rental vehicle; is not hired to them under a hire purchase or

leasing agreement.

My renewal has just arrived - 2007 Focus 1.6 petrol, 6000 miles p.a. and full NCB. Gone up from £130 to £153, or roughly 18%. I think I will phone them up later and suggest they sharpen their pencil and try again! I did that last year and they knocked a tenner off.

A phone call this morning resulted in the premium going from £153 back down to £131. So only a £1 more than last year. Happy with that.

Car has just passed the MOT as well with only the usual advisory on 'Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement' (both sides) but they've reported that for years and it hasn't progressed to a fail yet. Hopefully won't be more than a few hundred to fix if it does.

Which engine size have you bought Heidfirst? I fancy a Corolla 2.0 but many reviews say the 1.8 is nearly as good but less money.

As for the cover my LV policy covers courtesy cars. However when I turned up to pick one up the VW dealer wouldn’t accept my insurance doct as cover. They would require specific written agreement from my insurer, quoting the loan car reg. I hadn’t the time to pursue that while at the service desk so had to cough up for the dealer cover. So if you’re relying on your own cover you might want to check out your dealer’s rules in advance.

2.0. The 2023MY> 5th gen 1.8 hybrid is a big improvement over the earlier & tbh I could live with it but the 2.0 is better again. After a lot of work/considerable time watching cars in the market & speaking to dealers all over the UK I have paid similar money for a 2.0 as many dealers wanted for a 1.8. Compromised a bit on preferred colour & it doesn't have the JBL speaker upgrade but you can only pick from what is available.

If you can live with the 1.8 & are happy with no built-in satnav (but Android Auto/CarPlay) there are some very tempting offers on low mileage Suzuki Swaces (for me it would have been Ultra trim if I had gone Swace).

Thanks for the update. Re the Swace, my wife has a 2020 Suzuki Vitara but both the dealer we bought it from and the more local dealer are poor. Luckily we have an excellent indie but I’d now be reluctant to buy a newer Suzuki car from either main dealer. Anyway, best stop this off-topic diversion that I’ve started.
