Peugeot 308 SW - Axle Rust - David Moir

Hello, hoping for some advice for a car I've test driven. It drives really well but I don't know how much axle rust is ok and how much should be expected of a 2016 car. It looks like it's flaking but I'm unsure whether that could lead to failure.

I've linked to an image here as I couldn't see a way to post an image. Can remove link if that's no allowed on the forum.

Thanks

Looks excessive for an 8 year old car . I’ve got far less on my 20 year old focus . Think I’d avoid this one.

Looks pretty thick metal though, depends on the condition else where. If you decide to buy rust proof with something like Lanoguard or Owatrol oil after removing flaky stuff.

[EDIT] Second viewing of the round bush attachment top left - that looks pretty bad so yes I'd agree - avoid.

Spent its life in Scotland or been used extensively by the sea?

Agree with both of the above, look elsewhere, even if you de-rust and treat that subframe/axle every time you need to undo a bolt under the car it'll be touch and go whether its seized solid.

Congrats in order for looking underneath before buying, most never do even on easy to inspect ladder chassis 4x4s.

Walk away & avoid 308 T9 all together - did you take a long test drive as the steering wheel isn't centred with the drivers seat & can lead to back problems as you sit slightly off centre in right hand drive versions.

It will also have the slow awful to use touchscreen infotainment system fitted & it will frustrate you in a short space of time.

Looks ok for an 8yr old car, it’s surface rust, but I wouldn’t buy a 308 even if it was immaculate. Find a good petrol Focus 1.6 (not 1.0 Ecoboom), Mazda 3 petrol, Honda Civic or Toyota Auris instead. It’ll serve you better.

Got to agree with SLO, my old boss had one, had nothing but trouble with it.
